While we may go in to an event focused reaching the finish line first, not all is lost if that doesn’t happen. In fact, pushing through unexpected obstacles and persevering because of the help of a friend makes eventually reaching that finish line even sweeter in the end. This is that friend for me, and I captured this photo of him after he sacrificed his own race result to help me fix a mechanical and reach the finish of the Gravel Grovel.

During the Alpe d Huez stage of this years tour, my wife and cousin and I rode from the base of the Alpe to the top of the Col de la Croix de Fer and back only to then climb the iconic Alpe. Along for the ride was my camera gear which added over 15 pounds to the experience. There were many times I second guessed my decision to bring it along. We were positioned about 5K from the top. As the leaders and chasers came through, I was able to catch Egan Bernal staring down the barrel of my lens.

The Man Behind The Camera. Richie Porte was man of the hour before the 2018 National Road Championships. I was down there as spectator for the first time in 7 years after racing every edition since 2011. It was set to be big year for Richie, with a good tilt towards the TdF. Luck hasn’t been on his side…yet.
