2023 Photo Comp | Professional – Judging

As part of my job as a photographer, exploring is one of the main reasons for a early wake up every morning. To explore not only means to travel to new places, but also to try to see places from other points of view. In this case we were crossing (and exploring) our own country (Italy), Puglia, the heel of it. As soon as I saw this salt pans, I imagined cyclists crossing the thin border, reflecting on colors.

Walking down The Poggio I had a brief & uncharacteristic rush of decisiveness, I decided to ‘pan’ the lead rider, a technique that can produce really effective results. The downside is that it can be quite sporadic and even with a steady hand and several attempts you can end up with not a lot to show for your efforts. But I decided the risk was worth it. Click. Pause. Click. Pause. The shutter was so slow and the rider so fast I only got two goes at it. I was really happy with resulting image.

The support for the Tour De France in Bilbao was crazy. This image was taken of stage winner Adam Yates on the Côte de Pike (the final climb) before the descent into the City centre finish. The Basque fans were out in force and wild with excitment. Riders and team cars struggled to get through the crowds. I even managed to get my foot run over by a car whilst taking this shot. No long term damage done and a colourful memory of a great day out in Bilbao.

Adam Yates dog Zoe went into the Team Emirates UAE bus at the start of stage 2 of the Tour De France and re-emerged in her very own yellow jersey. Here, Zoe shows her affection and pride for Adam's achievements with a good old fashioned lick of the leg! You occasionally encounter lovely moments like this at the start of stages at the Grand Tours when families visit the riders.

It was an ordinary ride with my partner, Natalia, on which, as usual, I took my little Ricoh. However, I forgot to change the settings and only when I got home did I realize that I had set a long shutter speed.

When I took this photo, it was around five in the morning, and this competitor had had a sleepless night and 400 kilometers in his legs.

Long-distance cyclists say that the night verifies everything. When the only thing that accompanies you are your thoughts and in front of you there is only a piece of asphalt illuminated by a lamp. When trees become people and every sound you hear intensifies the images in your imagination. This must have been the case with this rider who was climbing to Sliezky Dom - the highest point in the High Tatras where you can ride a bike - while bears were circling around.

During the 2023 Cactus Cup's opening short track race, Riley Amos (Trek Factory Racing) slid out on a particularly technical corner, managing to come out the other side without injury despite the unusual angle of his ankle at the start of the fall. Despite the crash evaporating his lead, he managed to win the day's race over former teammate Brayden Johnson (Bear National Team).

During an excellent performance at the US Pro Cup in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Gwyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing) smacked her transmission on a rock, forcing the rising star to run the final kilometer of the race with a broken drivetrain, narrowly missing out on a top 3 podium.

Shot for the Harbour Tour, a Grand Fondo passing through the enormous Rotterdam harbour. This brutalist structure is a 'windbreaker'; it breaks the wind for the ships passing through the canals behind it, so they won't have any problems.

The Dolomites never ceases to amaze. This is right before the famous Tre Cime climb, famous from this years Giro D'Italia. The still slightly snowy mountainous backdrop makes you feel small. Shot for Wielrenblad magazine, a Dutch print magazine.

This photo always makes me smile. Taken at this year's Giro start of week three on stage 16 Monte Bondone. The last climb, the race had come and gone and most of the peloton was up the road. The atmosphere was electric. Everyone had weathered the rain and was determined to enjoy every moment. The enthusiasm had even spilt over to the riders. Thomas assisted the spectators in there cheering. You can see the joy in the eyes of the spectator and joy was there to see. Again makes me smile.

This photos means so much to me. As as I took this photos there was tears in my eyes. I know both Neah Evans and Jonny Wales very well. Here Neah along with Elinor Barker has just won the Women's Madison championships in Scotland. I shot the race and was as excited as any fan. Just moments after post race interview they were reunited. The look of happiness, pride and love is plain to see. It was a privilege to be there and to catch this moment.

This Photo is of Tomos Pattison winning the Betty Pharaoh RR in Wales. I could not get to the finish line and saw a bridge over the road the had good veiw so I used it and just in time to catch this shot. He got some ribbing for not putting his number on correctly.

Some photos are harder to take than others. This one is of Dan Bigham. I have known Dan since 2017 and was at his wedding. He had held the hour record and was TP world champion at the time this was taken. He had missed out on the national TT champs. The knock effect of this missing out selection for the world's TT on home roads. Seeing a friend hurting is not easy. He later lost out to Giana in the IP by the last peddle turn. Sport is a cruel but that is the way it is.

Some photos you just like, this is one that falls in this category. It shows Kevin Vermaerke attacking the feed zone on Hannover Street at this year's Worlds in Glasgow. The crowds and Getting out of the saddle to attack the climb for me combines to make a lovely shot

This was taken at the end of the only UCI one day race in the UK. The Cicle Classic at Melton Mowbray. The rider had just finished this gruelling race. Dave Bolland is someone I know and as he caught me taking a sneaky photo saw me and a big grin came over is dirty face. His love for the sport is written there for all to see.

Mark Cavendish on stage 20 of the Giro. After a gruelling route and one big push he only had the mother of all time trails to complete. He went on to win the last stage but the determined look in his eye showed why he is still one of the best out there

One of my favourites this is Fred Wright on his way to winning the British national road race championships only a couple of weeks after loosing his team mate Gino Mader in a crash at the Tour of Switzerland. I took a punt that the climb just short of the finsh line would be the best shot. This turned out to be a good call. The emotion and drive to win is there for all to see. He honoured his friend at the finish line.

The final climb on the queens stage was on Cearphilly mountain on local roads. So I make an intelligent guess That something would be happening on that climb. I when all in with this shot as I had no time to get to the finish. They did not let me down the crowed where the equal of a French mountain finish. They even had a band playing.

This was taken on stage 19 of the Giro. I did recce three months before and saw the view. My first time in the Dolomites and they did not let me down, this photos is most complete photo I have ever taken of a race. The snow cover peaks of the iron grey mountains, the clouds, spectators, the whole peloton meandering up the mountain pass had everything a bike race has. Considering the weather of the first two weeks I was lucky. I look at this photo and think did I really take this? Yep I did lol

Marko Dzalo, the Ineos Grenadiers carer, helps Geraint Thomas cross the finish line after realising that he had lost the general classification on the final time trial. Both parties had spent months away from their families preparing for this day. With nothing left to give, Geraint needed Marko’s help to get back to where his teammates were to console him.

Geraint Thomas, who had already lost the race on the final time trial stage, helped his former teammate and friend Mark Cavendish to win the final stage of the 2023 Giro d'Italia by giving him a lead out. After the stage, Mark approached Geraint during an interview and embraced him as a gesture of gratitude for his support. Geraint later tweeted, "Well, if I couldn't win, I thought I might as well try and help an old mate out."

Every fall in Northern California we have a CX series called rodeocross, it's a grass roots series that has been happening for over a decade. This photo was taken before one of the race starts. These two girls were waiting for their mom to check in and get her bib and I just quickly got a snapshot of that moment. I love that fact that the girls didn't feel the need to smile or put on a face for the camera. They were completely themselves in that moment.

This photo was also taken at Rodeocross (our NorCal grass roots CX series) right after the elite men finished. This is one of my favorites from the year because of the rawness of the image. It's also so relatable, that dissociation feeling post race is very real.

This photo was also taken at Rodeocross (A NorCal grassroots CX series every fall) during one of the men's races. While experimenting with shutter drag, I snapped this photo. The race is at night, so It can feel very lonely out there. I really wanted to capture the effort of the athlete, but help the viewer feel like they're there.

This was a brutal 100 mile MTB race in Leadville, CO with high winds and storm clouds rolling into the finish line. Probably one of my favorite races of the year due to the pure grit and amount of pain people are willing to endure on this famed course. I was focused on taking photos of the winning female, and suddenly I turned around and Paige Onweller and Ruth Winder embracing at the finish line of Leadville. They were both sobbing, shaking, depleted. It was an incredibly beautiful, raw moment.

At Big Sugar Gravel in Arkansas, Kasia Niewiadoma came in first place. To me, this moment was a moment of significance within the sport. The U.S. perception of cycling is quite different than in Europe. Yet, to have the amount of excitement, media, news, and interviewers around Kasia in the U.S. - brought so much joy and hope. A signal of more to come, especially in regard to women in cycling within the U.S.

At Big Sugar, all of the photographers ended up in the same spot. The course wound through two cliffs, and it was an epic scene. Except, I didn't want the same epic scene. I bushwhacked through the forest and climbed up a rock wall to find this moment. I had to listen to the other photographers start yelling to know when the athletes were coming through - and then I clicked away. This moment gives me a sense of love for the art in cycling. This brief moment, frozen. I make art out of their art.

Absolutely drained. Absolutely emptied. This shot of Russel Finsterwald represents so much of this sport. When you finish a race, time is frozen. In my time as a pro cyclist, that's how I would describe it. An alternate reality. Now as a photographer, I feel it again: just through my lens. In these brief moments, it feels as if the athlete and I share a quiet moment amongst the unfrozen outer world. We both know.

Something beautiful about this one. I walked past so many times, trying to get shots of racers, barely even noticing this scene. When I finally saw them, I felt a sense of understanding. This is why we race. Everything seems to fit in this photo. These cyclists were family. Teammates. Warriors. But taking the moment away from the chaos of the race - it seems serene.

Unbound Gravel is a very hard race to shoot. You are in off-road cars all day long following racers over the 200 mile course. This spot was the first stop we drove to and by the time we got to this creek the peloton was already shattered and bikes were already destroyed. On June 6th NYC recorded as the city with the worst air quality in the world. The scenes through the city resembled images from the movie "Blade Runner". It still didn't stop the pedicab riders from going out and looking for tourists in Times Square.

There is always one winner. It was a privilege to watch these two battle it out at the World Championships to finish this close at the end. I love seeing the difference between the body languages of the winner and the second place in this image.

While waiting for the finish of stage 2 of the Tour de France in San Sebastián, I was taken by not just the sheer number of fans, but how many levels of them there were stacked up over each other on balconies, like proper arena seating in a sport that so famously lacks it. I had my backdrop I decided. That it would record Cofidis breaking its 15 year Tour de France stage win drought, by the eminently likable Victor Lafay ahead of a frustrated Wout van Aert, was icing on the cake.

Didi is a familiar sight alongside the roads of the Tour de France, but the devil's work begins long before the race hits the Alps. I caught a glimpse of his distinctive horns peeking out through the crowd at the team presentation the day before the race kicked off in Bilbao, Spain. Not even a steady stream of rain could deter him or the fans who started arriving hours ahead of the presentation for a glimpse at cycling’s best athletes, and of course its most famous fan.

Carolin Schiff was understandably thrilled to win Unbound Gravel. Despite the pouring rain which began falling more heavily just as she was narrowing in on victory, the German victor was all smiles at the finish, glancing at my lens with a look of joy and a touch of disbelief.

The Montrose Street climb was one of the most iconic parts of the 2023 Cycling World Championships. The narrow pavements were gridlocked during every road event, with the Men's Road Race serving as a standout event. This young girl - whose passion for road cycling is reflected more in her home-made sign than her expression - had one of the best seats in the house atop her father's shoulders. The range of spectators in Glasgow showed that it's the fans that make the sport as much as the riders.

I had the pleasure of working with Beth Shriever and the GB BMX Racing team before and during the 2023 Cycling World Championships. Watching Beth win the Elite Women's final at Knightswood BMX Centre was one of the standout moments of the championships for me personally, as I had become invested in the wonderful, talented riders in the elite squad. I like this photo because it captured Beth having a brief moment to herself on the podium to reflect on her victory in front of a home crowd.

I sometimes describe my photography style as 'mainly desktop backgrounds', and this image is no exception. It gives a sense of the scale of excitement, diversity, and passion that comes with watching a road race live and in person. The plethora of fanbases and nations represented along the Montrose Street climb in Glasgow at the 2023 Cycling World Championships was amazing to see, and the energy they brought with them was unmatched at any other race I attended in Glasgow this August.

One of the hardest but most rewarding parts of being a photographer is making the best of any situation. I didn't have accreditation for track centre at the 2023 Cycling World Championships, but I still wanted to capture an iconic photo after Neah Evans and Elinor Barker won the Madison on Day 5. Whilst you can't see their faces, the scale of their achievement is reflected in the wider context of the photo (the swarm of photographers around them as they hold the Union Flag aloft).

Katie Archibald is a giant of the track cycling scene. Synonymous with European and World Championship success across the endurance disciplines, she received rapturous applause whenever she took to the track in Glasgow at the World Championships. This photo was taken during the Points race, the final event in the Women's Omnium. Katie was pretty much out of medal contention, but used the cacophony of noise around her to take two laps and deliver a dominant performance in front of a home crowd.

This shot was taken back in Jan of 2023 at the British National Cyclocross Trophy Rnd 6 at Cyclopark in Kent, UK. The weather was pretty biblical that day with heavy rain showers ripping across the course, which isn’t far from the Thames estuary. This tested everyone to the limits and beyond, and including me and my equipment. I had my faithful Canon 5D MKIII with me and I found out just how weather proof it wasn’t, after one of the said biblical showers came through and it died not long after.

This shot was also taken at the British National Cyclocross Trophy Rnd 6 at Cyclopark in Kent, UK - Jan 2023. The day wasn’t a complete wash out and at intervals the sun broke through presenting opportunities to use the light and high contrast against the dark and brooding skies in background. It was a tough, technical and slippy course. This shot was taken just after one of the longest sequence of steps that I have ever seen, the rider here having just remounted after climbing the steps.

This is the third and final shot taken at the British National Cyclocross Trophy Rnd 6 at Cyclopark in Kent, UK - Jan 2023. The course was a tough, technical and slippery. The riders needed total concentration for the whole lap where picking the correct lines was crucial. I really like to get in close to capture the riders faces which tell the story of how well their day is going. Or not as the case may be.

This photo was taken at the London X League end of season Teams Champs in February 2023. My club was organising the day and I was marshalling during the races and so was rooted to one spot. I love noting more that to play round with slow shutter speeds to see how far I can push the motion blur before everything turns to total abstraction. So this was the perfect excuse to mess about and have fun. This shot is my favourite from that grey February afternoon.

This photo was taken while snapping rider shots on the Southdowns in Sussex, UK while working on a Glorious Gravel Sportive in July of 2023. For me it sums up what getting out on your bike is all about. I enjoy noting more that to be out in the wilds and capturing the joy of gravel riding in the UK. For it shows some of the best off road riding that the UK has to offer.

This photo of Line Burquier was a tad more difficult for me as I doubted if I could take the photo. She just finished Short Track and was noticeably exhausted by it, her face completely covered in mud, so basic instinct said, "take the shot!" I just couldn't, realised she was in a vulnerable space as she was changing shirts and felt like I had to give her a bit of time to get her new shirt on, but the look was so empowering and vulnerable at the same time so I couldn’t resist taking the shot.

“Everest, cycling?” A 10 day route averaging 4.000m and altitude sickness being an ever-present concern. I had the opportunity to witness a group of thrill seekers conquering Everest Reserve. The day we scheduled to arrive there I asked the driver to drop me off, grabbing a spare bike and riding this final leg with the group. from all stages i simply couldn't miss this one. No bib, no shoes, no helmet, just my trousers and a down jacket, camera on the back, I rode the last 65km up to 5.600m.

This picture was taken during the second day of Race Around Rwanda, an ultracyling event. Despite Manuel was forced out the competition due to a problem on his bike, he decided to continue the course and finished anyway. We were behind him looking for a spot to stop when around the bend we suddenly noticed those children playing in the ditch on the side of the road. This made us think a lot. Not following the race and taking it slow was an opportunity to reflect about this country, its people.

Cycling photography is a lot of time taken by the field while we wait for the rider to come toward us or by following them by car. Over the years, I have developed skills in photographing athletes while riding with them, whether it be uphill or downhill, to create the effect of being in the ride with them. I took many risks, even fracturing my femur this year on my bike. This photo is a great example to feel the speed of a descent in a group by the sea in California.

US Paracyclist Joe Berenyi competes in the Men's C3 Individual pursuit at the UCI 2023 Paracycling Track World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Joe lost his arm in an accident, but has become a paralympic gold medalist and multiple time world champion. He has to start without being able to pull on the bars, and steers completely with one arm, counterbalancing with his body. Taken from outside the track, it shows the perfect balance and line on the banking.

This is Ibrahim Kamara finishing third on stage 2 of the Tour de Lunsar and ending the day as first Sierra Leonean rider. The girl hugging him is his younger sister. He was very emotional having moved teams before the race and not having an ideal preparation. He wanted to prove that he was the best rider in the town and with his placing on stage 2 he certainly did. The next day he would collapse from heat exhaustion and sadly not finish on the podium again.

This was stage 3 in Lunsar. Most stages begin in the morning and we race in the midday sun, however, the President came to visit that morning and we were herded into a playing field by big lads with guns. It was 12 pm and 40+ degrees. Save for a little corrugated iron sheet, there was no cover from the sun whatsoever and it went on for ages. The race was then in golden hour much later in the day so I was able to capture this photo of Preye John Dede and Innocent Emmanuel capturing victory.

Even in mid-summer, the Friday night racing lasts deep into the dark evening at the outdoor Jerry Baker Velodrome, with the track lights casting unusual spotlights. Racers line up along the rail to start the next event. In this moment, the track lights appear to glow from the head and the heart of this racer, as they put both into use as soon as the racing begins.

Missoula, Montana hosted UCI and Pan American Championship cyclocross races this season, showcasing the stunning backdrop of mountains in the American West. While the day was mostly overcast, the final Elite race of the day occurred as the sun slipped just below the clouds, behind the snow-capped mountain range. The lighting created a stunning opportunity for a silhouette and capturing the glittering mountains.

Cyclocross racers thrive on the possibility of mud and slop. The US cyclocross championships delivered a mostly dry course for several days, until the final race of the penultimate day featuring the junior women. As they lined up, the rain began to fall in heavy sheets and persisted the entire race. The anticipation of a fierce race showed in the faces of the front row competitors just before the start whistle blew.

The US Cyclocross National Championships took place in Louisville, Kentucky, also home to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. The elite championship races were treated to a start line serenade of My Old Kentucky Home by the official Churchill Downs bugler, Steve Buttleman.

Stage 1 of the Giro this year was one of the few opportunities I got to do a recon of the course for photo locations before the stage got underway. It all paid off after finding a sequence of massive murals next to the course that framed the riders perfectly as they flew past. I managed to get Remco Evenepoel on his way to a commanding stage win with this amazing mural behind him, it was a great way to start a huge three weeks.

The Men’s Road Race at worlds this year was biblical. As Mathieu Van Der Poel crested Montrose for the penultimate time, I didn’t see his ripped shorts, bloody legs or broken shoe from his crash, until after I’d shot the entire sequence. Having a minute to check my pics as I rushed to the finish line. It’s wild when races unfold like this, but even wilder when you’re so caught up in the adrenaline of getting a shot that you don’t realise what’s happened until after the moment is already over.

Strade Bianche is always one of those races that gets so hyped up for amazing images. After an awful first go at the race in 2022, where I genuinely wondered if I could do the job anymore off the back of a 2 year pandemic hiatus, I was super motivated for some photographic redemption in 2023. This pic came about around half way into the race, with everything lining up to give me something I’m really proud of, putting the demons of 2022 behind me. It was a great way to start the season.

„From Trinidad to Roubaix“ She was the first black woman to take part in the women's Tour de France. Teniel Campbell from Trinidad & Tobago is a role model for female cyclists all over the world. After Paris-Roubaix this year, I had the opportunity to photograph Teniel in the showers of the velodrome. After all the sacrifice of the day, and the one on the road to a professional cycling career.

„The missing victory“ There are certainly few races that have been as high on Mathieu van der Poel's wish list as Paris-Roubaix. This year, he fulfilled this dream and crossed the finish line in the velodrome in first place. A very special moment in cycling history for him, for all the spectators, but also for me as a photographer.

"The Triple" Liège, April 23, 2023: I stood at the finish line of the final Ardennes classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Demi Vollering was the first to cross the finish line, completing the legendary Ardennes Triple and writing cycling history. Overwhelmed by her emotions, she stopped just ahead of me. Just before her team-mates, team members and family joined her, I was able to capture this brief, private moment.

"No space" CycloCross World Championships in the Netherlands promised to be a great spectacle. But the crowds of spectators in Hoogerheide in February 2023 were simply beyond words. I positioned myself on a hill at the start of the race to photograph the first two laps with a backdrop of spectators. Early on, the two protagonists, Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert, were able to pull away from their rivals. This gave me the opportunity to shoot this image.

"Chasing the rainbow" For decades, the best cyclists have been honoured with the legendary rainbow jersey. 2023 was a very special year for Mathieu van der Poel. He not only won the cyclocross world championship title, but also claimed the world road race title. This picture was taken on the hunt for his first World Championship jersey of the year. I positioned myself on a hill opposite a World Championship banner and chose a low shutter speed to create a dynamic image.

My partner Leighann and I wanted to have a small adventure in the mountains before the high peaks were closed for Winter in Nth East Victoria. We were able ride/hike up to the one of the highest rideable points in Australia a week before the snow settled in for the season. A storm had rolled through earlier in the day and had blanketed the Bogong High Plains in cloud. It was a memorable afternoon in our amazing backyard!

In September I was lucky enough to shoot the Masters National Road Race Championships. It was held in the small town of Dookie during peak canola season, I scrambled around all day trying to find the best angles of the riders amongst the fields. Climbing trees, fences and road signs I had a super fun day capturing the event!

At Unbound Gravel I was in the frenzied finish line chaos grabbing the usual pictures of exhaustion and muddy faces. Then I turned around to see one of those I-can’t-believe-this-is-happening moments. A fan had come up to the barrier right behind fourth place finisher Laurens ten Dam, carrying a dog that bears more than a little resemblance to the Dutch rider—a doggelgänger if you will, Laurens ten Dog. The interaction was brief, but lasted long enough for them to simultaneously smile.

Despite what Cage the Elephant may try to have you believe, there is in fact rest for the wicked. Didi the Devil, the Tour de France’s most recognizable fan, is usually seen jumping roadside all July long, far more spryly than any septuagenarian has any right to be I might add; perhaps he struck a deal with the—I digress. But even he can’t always be on, and took a quiet moment of rest on a park bench ahead of the team presentation in Bilbao as fans queued behind him for the event.

Even the biggest fans can’t be cheering all the time. These Warren Barguil supporters waited patiently outside the team paddock for their favorite rider to emerge ahead of stage 1 of the Tour de France. I enjoyed the look on the Barguil cutout’s face, which coupled with the hands on his hips makes it appear as if even he was growing tired of waiting for himself to emerge.

The welcome that the Giro Donne 2023 offered was in a "soaked" format. As you can see in this photo of Georgia Baker during a torrential downpour during the TT stage. I positioned myself under a building, which provided little protection against such a volume of water. Since I was completely soaked, I stayed there until the race was stopped, trying to keep my camera dry as much as possible, and taking as many photos as I could. (The camera survived.)

Ibrahim had switched teams for this year’s race from his hometown Lunsar Cycling Team to the Freetown based C2C. In a country with a small cycling community, this was a big move. He wanted to let everyone in his hometown know he was still a force to be reckoned with, and the outpouring of emotion was justification for all his hard work.

A sight usually seen on high mountain passes in European grand tours was recreated on a 100-metre stretch of isolated road in the North of England. The crowds swell throughout the day as competitors, who have already turned themselves inside-out getting to the top, stay to cheer on their fellow riders. One of the many unique qualities of the hill climbing community.

Rwandan cyclist Eric Nduwayo tackles heavy rains at the Race Around Rwanda, Rwanda’s only ultra-endurance race. Storms had been rolling in overnight when I reached this gravel section at dawn. Minutes later, Eric came up the hill navigating the rutted marks left by the trucks, whilst avoiding the herd of cattle crossing. Eric and five other Rwandans raced as part of the Rwanda Beyond project, which helps the riders to build on their careers beyond cycling, and inspiring them to stay in school.

When we think of cycling, we think of speed. Riding also has its small moments of rest, reflection, feed, etc. With this photo, I wanted to capture these elements in a single image featuring a cyclist at rest. Through a double exposure, we can feel the speed of the sport.

Paris Roubaix 2023 - Wout Van Aert suffered brutal luck with a puncture during the final. This also took away his chance of winning. Although, after finishing 3th place and being disappointed, he showed his sportmanship and felt comforted by his son George. The way WVA can handle setbacks is a real testament of his resilience and sportmanship.

In 2022, Keegan Swenson rose definitively to the top of gravel racing in the U.S., winning the inaugural Life Time Grand Prix. In 2023 he returned more focused than ever. Here he was locked in just before the first event of the season at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. He would go on to win the race, the first of many en route to repeating his overall victory in the Grand Prix.

In my life as a cycling journalist, I’ve had quite a few how-did-I-get-here moments. Going to a press conference at a Basque grocery store was certainly one of those. Trek-Segafredo became Lidl-Trek just before the start of the Tour de France, and naturally the new sponsor was eager to show off refreshed kits before the race kicked off in Bilbao, Spain. That led to this image of newly crowned U.S. national champ Quinn Simmons inspecting a bag of jamón flavored Ruffles—ya know, race food.

I was snooping around the Alpecin-Deceuninck mechanics’ truck in the days leading up to the Tour de France Grand Départ in Bilbao, mostly in search of Mathieu van der Poel’s custom bike, but came across something far better. Behind the rows of impeccable race bikes was this poster of Muhammad Ali. Is it inspo for the riders or the mechanics or both? Either way, it rockets the team’s truck to the top of the WorldTour.

I hit my first photo location of the day at Unbound Gravel only to find several other photographers positioned already. Naturally I pivoted to this nearby field, trudging around in the morning-dew-covered tall grass to capture the lead riders speeding by as streams of early morning light shone through the clouds. My pants never fully dried the rest of the day, but it was well worth it.

Mare Island Pedalfest is an urban cyclocross race that takes place in a partially decommissioned shipyard. New this year was section that ran through the middle of an old warehouse. When I previewed the course in the foggy morning I knew immediately that I had to come back when the sun was coming through the windows. It took 4 hours, but it was worth it.

Cyclocross racing in Northern California is typically a pretty dry affair and we rarely get wet European-style mud races. After raining lightly all day the women's race at Nutty Cross (which takes place in a walnut grove) started in an absolute torrential downpour. My friend Ashley and the other women were treated to the most epic conditions all year.

“I’m gone, I’m dead”. We are on Col de la Loze and the crowd is huge. Jonas Vingegaard passes and after a few minutes I see Marc Soler and right behind him, there’s Pogacar, fighting hard to follow his teammate’s wheel. Soler looks back and tries to help him in any way but Tadej keeps struggling. What you see in this photo is what will be the key moment of the Tour de France: on Col de la Loze Pogacar lost his hopes for the yellow jersey as Vingegaard won almost 6 minutes on him.

Here is Demi Vollering catching her breath and realizing that she just won the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.It was very important to show how many media were covering this women’s race, something that we are not used to see.On the Tourmalet, the most important mountain stage, Demi stocked everyone with an amazing performance and wore the yellow jersey for the first time on the podium.On the day of the time trial, she confirmed her win.Demi just made her dream come true.

Here is Mathieu van der Poel on the notorious climb known as Mur de Montrose during the World Championships in Glasgow. In a remarkable solo attack and despite enduring a crash, Mathieu continued with a broken shoe and surged towards the finish line. This triumph held significant importance for him, capping off a year filled with notable achievements. The spectators roared with enthusiasm, erupting into wild cheers as they witnessed Mathieu's solitary journey to the finish line.

Ibrahim Kamara recovers after his exertions over four long and gruelling stages at the Tour de Lunsar in Sierra Leone. Having switched teams for this year’s race from his hometown Lunsar Cycling Team to the Freetown based C2C, he rode to let everyone in his hometown know he was still a force to be reckoned with. Ibrahim was later taken to hospital for exhaustion and dehydration.

Day One of the Race around Rwanda, the country’s only ultra-endurance race. This was taken on the first of many sections of gravel in the race. Elijus Civilis (far right) won the 1000km race in just over 51 hours. Stopping for just 4 hours during the race, he told me that as he approached the finish line in Kigali he began to hallucinate that his family and friends were all riding with him. Over the years of endurance riding he has learnt to embrace this mindset.

The peloton passes the charred remains of a palm field at the Tour de Lunar. Sierra Leone’s biggest road racing event hosted annually in the small mining town of Lunsar. The race continues to grow with the 2023 edition seeing the first international teams from Nigeria and USA competing. Cycling may still be a fringe activity in Sierra Leone, but the Tour de Lunsar is helping the sport grow in stature and provides young cyclists with the opportunity to race.

TDF Stage 015. For several years I have seen this cable-car graveyard, and always wanted to make a picture there. Now the moment was there, It was a long neutral at the start of stage 015 of the TDF. All the stars lined up, so I could make this once in a lifetime shot.

Stage 019 TDF. It was a long, long day in the car with my co-workers/collegues, as they were complaining all the time. At the very last moment we where able to find a little pittoresk village. In this village there was the most weird cafe/workplace. Where men where walking is skirts and have wigs and strange heads. I walked in and asked if I could take a picture..... from this moment on a little fairytale begun. I have taken hundreds of pictures all good an special, this is my favorite.

Strade Bianche. I arrived a day before the race and I used this extra time to scout the track. I stoped at this place and stayed for 2,5hours to see/find this spot. It was a big gamble as I had 1 opportunity during the mens race. I gambled and it worked out perfectly. I think the best unique Strade Bianche Shot. Not the 13in a dozen shots everybody took sitting next to each other ;-).

NK Cyclocross. The Grand Dame of Cycling. Maybe the last time we saw Marianne Vos in a WC Jersey, I enjoyed every moment of this race. I spotted this place of the track in a recon two days before the race and thought this would be the most spectacular place of the track. I waited and waited until the riders came, it was just a matter of seconds and the moment I pushed the shutter I knew it was good.

PRBX. As the final of the race had begun, the favorite riders entered the last 50Km. I made a navigation mistake and ended up at a random corner in a cobble section. This moment ended up to be the best picture I took in the race. The lucky mistake.

Stage 016, Giro. As we took a good look at the last Km's of stage 16, we decided that the last Km's would be the most photogenic of the day. to bad millions of white campers thought the same. We had to park the car 2Km after the finish, I walked almost 4Km down and then luckely I could find a spot of 35mtrs, where the campers could not park because of a little swamp. And was able to take this picture.

Stage 007, TFD Femmes. During stage 007, Demi Vollering attacked on the final climb on col du Tourmalet. To bad the mountain was covered in the clouds, so no spectaculair views, luckily the crowd made up for this, the most spectaculair stage in women's cycling until now.

Eyes on the price... 9 times, Nys senior was the king of the Koppenberg. Probably little Nys was already riding around the track those days on his little wheeler... Now the little Nys has become a big one by winning one of the most legendary tracks of cyclocross. That makes 10 for the clan Nys.

We are in France, Les Gets for the Mtb Worldcup. We are a few photographer at the second turn of the track. For our position we can see the start gate. Loic Bruni see us from the gate and make him a hello with my hand. 2 turns later i send us as much dirt as he can ! I love spening time on the hill for MTB race.

For me, the image of the individual time trial at the Tour de Suisse symbolizes the inspiring role of cycling for the next generation. A young spectator, fascinated by the active athletes, could discover here the dream of shining as a cyclist themselves. But if everyone works together and pulls in the right direction, you can do it. After we took this picture with the riders, Andreas insisted on a full staff and team photo the next morning as well, which is also not as easy as it sounds ????

Mathieu van der Poel attacked Pogačar, Ganna and van Aert right after I took this photo so I immediately regretted my shooting spot choice on the Poggio, especially when I knew that MVDP won Milano–Sanremo. Eventually though this shot got quite popular, probably because of MVDP's "poker face", as opposed to his opponents grimaces of pain.

The long wait of a group of loud Spanish fans on a foggy and cold Tourmalet was rewarded by the sight of Demi Vollering alone at the front of the race. She won this penultimate stage of the Tour de France Femmes and got the yellow jersey.

Strade Bianche might just be the best race to shoot especially because of the hills it passes over, like this one on the Lucignano d'Asso sector. This is one of the many dangerous parts of the course, as you can see from the crash at the back of the peloton.

Spirals and lines: Every year in July, there is a bicycle race in France renowned for its breathtaking climbs and scenic beauty. While the French Alps are undoubtedly a gorgeous location for a bicycle race, we believe there is beauty to be found in the gritty and industrial landscapes where Americans race criteriums during the summer (Salt Lake City Criterium).
