La Vuelta '23 - Stage 1. A so much anticipated day that turned to be one of the most chaotic stages to remember. In weather conditions that were nowhere close to those of a city where the sun shines about 300 days per year. La Vuelta '23 - Stage 1. "The calm before the storm". TTT is by far the discipline where everything has to work like a Swiss clock. A snapshot from their warm-up lap, when everything still seemed to be dry and sunny. If only they knew what was coming next..

Donostia Klasikoa '23 - I always find funny the complete lack of awareness of some people standing by the roadside on World Tour races, watching a bunch of youngsters on carbon bikes passing by at 50kmh. Certainly a rider all dressed in white with a rainbow jersey on would draw their attention, even though the look in their eyes reveals that they don't know they just saw Messi on a bike.

Volta Catalunya '23 - Stage 7. This race is special for me because it always ends up in the city where I live and it gives me the opportunity to see from close distance and take pictures of what I see through a screen the rest of the year. Even more, the race concludes traditionally with some hilly laps in the circuit of the Montjuic park, starting the climbing at Teatre Lliure as in this picture.

Deep into what is currently the only UCI World Cup event in the US (Waterloo, WI), Fem van Empel, the slight rider that she is, rockets up a flyover, demonstrating her class. This course feature seemed so "Wisconsin" too me: the quintessential barn red siding, the white fencing and trim, the warm autumnal sky, even the boulders, which evoke the glacial history of the area. In cycling, a race can be as much about the place as the riders.
35 R4
Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado exiting the "Secret Bar" area of the Waterloo UCI World Cup race. The density of the crowd and trees in relation to the solitary figure of the cyclocrosser seems to almost pull at her wheels (in reality it was the mud). Looking out at the Columbia River that separates Oregon and Washington, we were riding high. The wind was an old friend of ours. The hot summer sun couldn’t slow us down. After traveling 3,500 miles across the country, we welcomed any challenge with open arms. Riders On The Storm I had made my way up to a feature near the end of the lap - an elevated berm, forcing the riders up high before they swooped down a slalom to finish. Having to adjust my angle further due to the crowd, I enjoyed seeing the riders "float" through my viewfinder - losing the context of the course. Caught most by the pearly white kits against the dark clouds and almost identical body language as they moved through the feature.

Viewfinders One of the things I noticed while attending Superworlds was just how many people - like myself - were carrying around cameras. Big, small, digital, film. It was a great uniting moment. Even with not speaking the same language - a questioning look, a quick point, and you'd see folks sharing what they were using, trading suggestions of good vantage points. Always supportive, always excited. I enjoy sharing what and how I see events, and I love to see them from others' perspective.

This photo reminds me that after the excitement, lights, and energy at the start finish line of a twilight Crit, there is darkness and quiet in other areas. While this photo can feel somewhat off in composition, I wanted to show that the dark shadows of sunset are also part of the race.

I like that there so much to look at here. Staging before a race is often chaotic, especially at a busy race with a lot of spectators. I feel like this photo gives a brief glimpse of the different approaches to pre-race focuses. Some riders chat and joke, some check computers, some get in the zone. This photo is also impactful in that the last lap of this race led to a mass crash with a lot of injuries-all things that these riders are likely not thinking about (or are actively trying not to).

I love that one house on the course decorated the yard with colorful flags that subtly show the slight wind that was coming through on a hot day. Unfortunately Mathieu crashed out of the race on the 1st Lap. You can't win them all, no matter how you prepare.

Inspiring the next generation. Stage 4 was the final Stage of the Region Pays de la Loire Tour. Finishing with six circuits around the streets of Le Mans, it was a tough course, that took in the 18% climb of Rue de Gazonfier. A young boy, wearing a Rainbow Jersey, roared encouragement to all the riders on every lap. He was rewarded on the last lap, when Georg Steinhauser, of EF Education-EasyPost, handed him his bidon. Something I'm sure he'll always remember!

End of the rainbow... The different conditions that cyclocross riders encounter throughout the season, is one of the many things that makes me love this sport so much. Tom Pidcock's final race in the World Champion's rainbow bands, came at the Benidorm Round of The World Cup. Held under blue mediterranean skies, there was a complete lack of mud to contend with, but there was plenty of dust and some slippy gravel tracks, keeping things very interesting for both the riders and the huge crowd.

The Lincoln GP is one of the toughest road races of the UK domestic season. The multiple climbs up the cobbles of Michaelgate, test even the strongest of riders. World Superbike Rider, Scott Redding can more often be seen in the saddle of a 250hp motorcycle, but his passion for all things two wheeled has led to him running a successful domestic cycling team. The effort required on the climb is captured by his gritted teeth, as he bravely tries to stay in the peloton.

The night before the Ronde van Drenthe for women, we almost had 10cm of snow, and the race almost got cancelled, with a backup plan with only local rounds over the Col du Vam, it as was hard race, luckely the riders did get the time to get used to the cold and snow.

So fast that his bike disappeared! I've been working on my flash photography skills this year to better control how I show movement while also not distorting the entire image. To complicate it, I shoot at night at a local cyclocross series, Fifth Street Cross. This moment captured a rider cutting through a turn in a way that represented the furious pedal strokes and bike bouncing through the course while also revealing the rider. The color combination of this moment made it even better.
184 R21
One of my longer exposures of the year is of a cyclocross course at night. Referencing techniques for astrophotography, I dialed down the aperture because the headlamps could be as bright as 1200 lumens. I exposed the course for a few seconds and popped a flash during the exposure to capture the silhouettes of riders. I particularly like how the course tape remains frozen to contrast the extreme movement of the riders through it.

Steam wafts off the face of a rider immediately post-race. The heat of his body and his perspiration contrasted with the cool Fall air to create this gentle representation of heat, and therefore, his effort. Aided by some backlight from a light stand for the event and a fill flash, I was able to capture this moment of reflection. I don't usually shoot portraiture, so I am pleased to have gotten this moment.

This photo was taken at the Waterloo World Cup in Waterloo, WI on October 15th. It features Witse Meeussen as he climbs one of the punchy climbs in the woods. I love how the light was coming through the trees in this particular location. It was as if there was a spotlight on the racers.

The cyclocross team I'm a member of put on a race in Cambridge, WI in early November. It was a cold morning but the sun was shinning bright. This particular section of the course had wonderful lighting as the sun was coming through the golden leaves. I really like how this panning shot gives the background a watercolor like effect.

We all know Remco Evenepoel. I took this picture at the Belgian time trial championships on the road. Soon it started to rain during the reconnaissance. In the bend where I was standing, the road turned into an ice rink. During the day I saw some riders sliding into the canal. During Remco's first pass, I saw his front wheel slip, and I was able to take this unique photo. Away title, I helped Remco out of the canal and on Sunday I saw him take the title on the road!

Julian Alaphilippe didn't have a great season. This photo taken at the E3 Saxo Classic brings these words to life. Crashing over the cobbles of the Ronde, in a lost position behind his teammate Florian. You see him suffering, but at the same time you think about that crash he made in the world champion's jersey after crashing into a bike in the leading group. Then you want to put something right the year after, you know you can do it, but in 2023 it won't work, same rider, same person,...

This photo was taken during my reconnaissance of the route of the opening time trial of the Giro Italy. Along the cycle path that runs right along the Adriatic Sea, an artist had painted a beautiful typical fisherman's house of the Abruzzo. Lacets of the Tarentaise. A lesser known climb all the way to La Combe and beyond. I recall the smell of the pine on the way up and being able to seek shade within the alpine gradients and not seeing a single soul apart from mountain goats. So tranquil and peaceful. A perfect Summers climb. One of the best kept secrets.....
331 R37
Lost in the landscape. A reason why I climb and ride. The vast open space of the mountains and how we can allow ourselves to get lost and feel so small amongst them. I believe we never truly conquer the high mountains, they merely let us pass through when mother nature permits.

In September last year we managed to ride up to 2750m off road. It was during the heat wave, mountain peaks were bare. There was no water running down. No visable glacier. Returning in July this year we wanted to explore a bit further than we'd reached the previously. We were delighted to see the return of snow up high, resulting in literally pushing our gravel bikes to their limits. This was also a stark reminder about climate change and the effects on our planet.

A ride to the refuge at Mont Jovet 2348m altitude. A Sunny day on the last day in August, where we consumed an omelette and replenished our bidons from the Eau Portable, whilst taking in the views of the Eau Gelée on the mountain peaks. Riding for me is about adventuring. Taking those moments to breathe it all in. Stopping to take in the surroundings, eating that omelette and soaking up the vistas.

Snow day reflections. This was taken on the last day of our Winter holiday in the French Alps. Early March this year and it hadn't snowed for weeks. Temperatures had been mild to say the least. We'd taken our bikes and had been riding alpine off road. We couldn't believe it when it dumped with snow and delayed packing our bikes to have some fun. Thank goodness we had taken some winter kit just in case it snowed!

The constantly changing and surrounding environment of cycling races is what makes it unique to other sports. This was at the Lincoln GP, and I can remember looking for different locations in the city on the later laps of the race and coming across this family outside a cafe. Suffice to say that Pinot had to stop there as the ultras were uncontainable.

Braun Cycling Right under the smoke of the port of Rotterdam former pro mechanic Herman Braun runs a small shop together with his son Dave. A rare breed of true bike builders driven by passion instead of money. Purists who prefer steel and titanium over disc-brakes and carbon. As "carbon is for fishing rods". Even if you're not in the market for a new bike, the museum-like (work)shop alone is definitely worth the trip. They will most likely offer you coffee, be sure to bring some cookies.

#CrossisBoss Who could've ever thought that this thing once called 'Veldrijden', where some locals gather in a field to drink and watch others take a mud bath with their bikes, would become THIS popular?! For those that are still on the fence, just give it a try. You'll most likely get cold, dirty, and slightly drunk, but I promise you, you won't be disappointed!

Cyclocross is a discipline in which it is very common for runners to have to compete on very hard and very muddy terrain on many occasions. Cycling can take you to the most scenic places in the world, and the British NCRR was no different, with the pier and sea in the background. The Trinity duo are climbing up the main climb of the British NCRR in the middle of the rain storm. It's not uncommon to get pictures of teammates together, but I think the team being Trinity with their crazy aesthetics also helps (I'm a big fan of their kit and bike design). It is also the crispness of the photo where the wheel manufacturer is readable, as is the frame manufacturer, with both riders having the closer leg extended to show off the S-Works branding perfectly.

This photo was taken in the Carrefour de l'Arbre, during Paris Roubaix. I love how the crowd cheers for Van der Poel. It is really exciting to be 5 ours early, see people ariving, to feel the adrenalin rushing when you hear the helicopter in the distance... And in ten minutes the race is gone, people are gathering around phones to watch the finish in the velodrom. The last rider is as much encouraged as the first.

Shadow cycling. I was pedaling a biketrip to Madrid doing the Pedalma cycling road route (Insta: pedalma_cycling) And I could catch my own shadow pedaling with the cold and freeze of the winter. I caught it with my gopro in this case.

Awesome garden to pedal. Beautiful place going to Montseny, big mountain close to Barcelona, to pedal with MTB or gravel, also road bikes.

The BikeBus in front of cars. Bike Bus is increasing a lot year by year in Barcelona from the lockdown until nowadays. There are more than 18 lines in BCN in which you can go by bike to the school usually on Friday with your family. In that photo I would like to show the bike bus in front of the cars (all the cyclist are considered as a one vehicle, so they are one Bike bus in this case) This is a photojournalist project made with a friend (Insta: @calvox_periche), you can see more there

A Bike Bus stop. You can see a typical Bike Bus stop where families and children are waiting the Bike Bus and then when it has arrived, they can join in it. This is the End. Alfa & Omega. The beginning & the end. Mother & Son. The end of something the start of another thing. Full stop and life-break... and continue. This was the end of a Bikepacking trip that I did on my own to say good bye to my mum. The end of my mum's trip.

I guess there are benefits to not being as fit as I once was. Watching the group I started with ride away from me was motivating and I was able to see things from a different perspective. A metaphor for life.

I brought my camera out to grab some shots at a local race. These guys tried to synchronize there celebratory salutes, but didn’t quite get the timing right. Made for a fun shot nonetheless.

Sometimes the light hits just right and you turn around to take a nice bike portrait. Photography is nothing without good light.

2023 and my first experience riding in the alps. In fact riding any mountain terrain. This was the first morning. I was very nervous. 3 of the guys I was riding with if only met the night before. But as the sun rose as we gather for our ‘grand depart’ the nerves were replayed by excitement. The day/week ahead was incredible. I’ll never forget it.

Snapping fans as we waited for the tour to pass. I’m betting this guy has some stories to tell. It’s amazing the people you meet and interact with thøugh cycling.

One of the coffee stops that keeps us fuelled. Quiet offer we are too out of breather to chat whilst climbing. It’s these little pit stops where stories are shared. I ride because I love being outside in my bike. But the social side of riding I think is equally important.

The professional season for 2023 is about the begin, with the peloton lined up on the start line for the first stage of the Tour Down Under. One rider looks to the heavens for inspiration while Luis Leon Sanchez, about the start his twentieth and final season as a professional, crosses himself and says a silent prayer amongst all the excitement at the start of a race.

Taken at the British National Hill Climb Champs, I think this photo shows the solitude of a hill climb. There are no teammates, no team car, just you, your thoughts, and the rising road ahead

Hill Climbs are the ultimate form of type-2 fun. On the aptly named climb 'The Struggle' in the Lake District, UK, the pain faces were on full display. Sweat, snot, spittle, no one cares how they look, all that matters is reaching the top.

Sometimes, when the legs are cramping, and the lungs are burning, the roar of the crowd, and a scream from a friend behind is all you have left to fuel you for that last hundred-meter rise.

The things you can do with a pink bike David Sanchez might not have won a medal, but he was a crowd favourite at the world championships with his pink bike, his exuberant tricks, and his enthusiasm. I wanted to capture him shine against the stormy skies of Glasgow.

"Scottish Pride Anna Shackley won a bronze medal in the women’s under 23 world championship road race on home roads, in Glasgow. I came across her by chance as she walked through the city proudly holding her coo and wearing her medal. She was accompanied by a volunteer, who shared the moment and had been part of the numerous people who made the championships possible."

This is by far my most daring shot of the year, a 3.2 seconds hand-raised motion blur, during the UCI Track Champions league, Women's scratch race. Zoom lenses were prohibited, so I had to be creative.

This photo was taken during the Gavere World Cup, in a very technical part of the race, it was a demonstration of Wout Van Aert's skills to stay on the bike, surrounded by a cheering crowd.

This is another from the 2023 Australian Open Criterium in Noosa. It's a 'hotdog' criterium and the punch out of the corners at either end of the course are taxing on the riders. I selected this rider as he animated the race with his all in white style, and attacks off the front. For me this image captures the power of this event, and I love the spectators creating a red background for him to 'pop' off of.

This young racer is taking on barriers approximately a quarter of his height at the 2023 State Championships held in St. Louis, Missouri USA. Racing the Junior Boys 10-12 age group, eyes looking forward focused on his next move, showing his grit. Competing in cyclocross at the age of 10, he is clearly ready for anything thrown his way.
