Lucas is 7 years old. He’s a really kind, lovely, super active, boy. He learnt to ride his bike just after the Vuelta finished and then rode 100km for Tour de Kids, another cancer charity here in Australia. Check out the video of Lucas riding on Fathers Day 2021—he’s on a 20″ wheel bike now and is fast!
He knows a lot about his Dad, and what was important to him. And he’s super proud to be a judge in his Dad’s photography competition. And yes — I couldn’t be happier knowing that Lucas is part of his Dad’s legacy.
It’s Lucas’s third year of selecting his list. It all started in 2019 when he heard the judges were choosing their top 10’s! Well this year, for the Amateur category he had a long list of 57 images, which he whittled down to 23 and then to his short list of 12. Rocks were a keen feature of his long list! Oh and yes, he did pick the Winner of the Amateur category amongst in his top 12.
It wasn’t easy but he’s made a list of 12 images in each category. He hopes you enjoy them.
Thank you Lucas — for showing us your list, and for delighting us with what interests you and showing us your keen eye for some great photos.
We hope you all enjoy seeing Lucas’s choices, and they inspire you to keep going with your passion.
Lucas & Leeanne

“In Sweden the winters are long, dark and cold, however, road cycling doesn’t stop once the snow comes. Taking inspiration from the Japanese outdoors aesthetic, I used a combination of flash and and very slow shutter. I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of riding on frozen roads in temperatures exceeding -10 at times along with the limited daylight hours we get in Sweden during December.” Chris Lanaway @chrislanaway

“For me as a photographer who likes to photograph emotional faces, the mask requirement is not always easy. But also for the athletes this subject is not always so pleasant.” Sam Buchli @buchlifotografie

“Moab is pretty well known for the epic mountain biking. But, the gravel cycling amongst the giants is very underrated. A group of cyclists ride towards the Le Sal Mountains.” Natalie Starr @natalierstarr

“What’s better than riding? Riding on the beach! And to make it even more exciting go out in the dark with some strong headlights! As part of an influencer ride from Bicycling Magazine (NL) we rode on the beach and had some fun getting our feet wet. Fun fact: in the Netherlands we have beach races, actual racing on the beach on mountainbikes with big slick tires. Maybe one of the toughest cycling disciplines out there! Shot for Bicycling NL.” Merlijn Spenkelink @merlingraphy

““A Shepherd and his flock” – taken during the 2021 Pan Celtic Race. Mike Sheldrake replenishes his energy with breakfast after what has been a tough few days on the bike. With a full stomach Mike begins to offer out the last remaining morsels to the local inhabitants before heading off on the rest of his journey.” Dan King @breakawaydigital

“The bike, for me, has been about where it can take you, who you can meet and what you can see. Cycling led me to photography. There’s something particularly interesting in the contrast between rider and landscape, and in this particular photo, or rather how its shot, it reminds me that sometimes cycling makes us feel more grandiose than what we are. It makes us feel more connected with our surroundings.” Justin Diamond @justinpdiamond

“Patterson Pass Road Race in California is known locally for a few things, the long grinding climb to the top of the pass, wind and windmills, and heat. What you can’t tell from this shot is that it’s already 80F (27C) at 8 AM.” Jeff Vander Stucken @jeffvsphoto

“Ryedale grand prix – Starting and finishing in the grounds of Ampleforth Abbey its one of it not my favourite race on the calender for the British national series.” Craig Zadoroznyj @craigzad

“Wout van Aert riding solo at Cyclo-cross World Cup Val di Sole. I like how lonely he looks but at the same time he’s not because he’s surrounded by crowds. Two worlds, he and them that merge together in one place.” Chiara Redaschi @chiara_redaschi

“2 in 1: be patient and you won’t need photoshop.” Javier Martínez de la Puente Azcárate @zubikophoto

“PrimeAbility, an organization founded by Alex Clark, where he inspires young people of all ages through fitness, is based out of Washington DC and offers bi-weekly rides. The core idea of the rides is to get the community together, teach leadership skills and let young riders explore their hometown. Here is a shot from a group ride visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial last April.” Daghan Perker @dperker

“I took this one in Marquette, Michigan, the largest city on the Upper Peninsula. It was days before my 30th birthday, and I had a lot going through my mind. In spite of all the turmoil, I knew I wanted bikes in my life. I was grappling with lots of changes, but I can always count on two wheels and pedals.” Travis Norman @travis_norman

“Adrian Jackson Racing Victorian XCO series round 4. Looks like he’s in Arizona somewhere, but this is Ballarat Victoria Australia. I love the colour of the rock.” Cameron Wells @weltzocam

“Cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Denver Colorado’s Mike Nields Memorial Bannock Street Criterium returned to downtown Denver on July 17, 2021, with the series of amateur races moving into the shadow of the titanimum-cladded Hamilton wing of the Denver Art Muesum, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. It was Libeskind’s first completed building in the United States, and provided a dramatic backdrop for speeding cyclists.” Reid Neureiter @reidnewphoto

“Old v’s young. My 5 year old nephew riding past the 160+ year old Gaol in Beechworth.” Joanne Turner @joturnerphotos

“Mawson magic: Day eight of our 850km family Mawson Trail adventure and we are an hour outside of Laura, South Australia, where abandoned settler cottages are dotted through canola country. It’s also near the Heysen trail, named after the artist Hans, and this ruined view feels like a painting. The picture will hang in our memories forever.” Peter English @penglish77

“This picture was taken during the Worlds. One of the first race since a long time with a crowd. A huge crowd. People were crazy at every corner. While riders were on the flanders circuit, supporters jumped on road and start partying. Just sharing their first moment back together, every nations drinking beers, dancing, shouting, enjoying life enjoying cycling. Suddenly the crowed separated in two and these guys on city bikes climb the Wijnpers full speed. Everyones went crazy about it.” Bastien Gason @bastiengason

“I took this exact photo last year, but it was just me and my shadow in the sunrise. This time, in 2021, I was joined by my friends.” Matthew Wiebe @matthewwiebe

“Exploring the Italian region of Puglia and its trulli, traditional dry stone huts with a conical roof,” Alain Rumpf @aswisswithapulse

“This cheeky bird in the Blue Mountains decided to land on my bike to have its lunch. As I got ready to take a photo it took off. Can’t blame the bird, it obviously has good taste in bikes.” Martin Lonie @chipolonie

“Discovering parts of Scotland I’d only heard through word of mouth and didn’t think they’d still exist was the best part of staycationing. Forgotton by time, turning to rubble and hidden under the dark waters of Loch Loyne, the ‘Road to the Isles’ can only be visited in late autumn once the damed waters are at their lowest and the old crumbling tarmac is revealed once again.” Matt Stevenson @mattwstevenson

“This photo was shot while we were testriding the dolomites for an event we organize called • Tour de Friends • because this is what cycling means for us. Its about riding with your friends, having the time of your life.” Rad Race @radrace
