This photo was made at Giro dell Emilia this year. It was before the start when Urška Žigart came to the Uae bus to say hi to Tadej Pogačar. They were talking a bit and then they kissed. I have captured the moment when Urška s eye appeared on Tadej s golden sunglasses. It shows the true love between the two great riders.

This was one of the best moments of this year's Tour de France. It was the battle between Tadej and Jonas and it shows how hard they were both trying to win until the finish line. The fans were cheering and motivating both riders.

After being hit by a motorbike on stage 18 of this years TDF Jack Bauer was one of the last riders to cross the line, he came across and slumped against the barriers looking defeated and pouring water over himself. As the only kiwi rider left in the race I raced there and had prime position to document the moment.

Kevin Vermaerke punctures on Stage five of the TDF. His soguiner was stranded on the other side of the cobbles with riders and team cars still blasting through the sector. Without a chance to run across between the chaos he threw the wheel infront of a team car to an assisting fan. I shot the saga in disbelief at what I witnessed. I love this sport.

I arrived at the galibier hours before the race would. I wanted time to scout the location. I was feeling down after a few bad days on the TDF. When I found this view I knew I wanted to shoot it with the yellow jersey on the road.

To me this photo represents the everyday life surrounding the TDF. The race passing through this mans village as he takes a break from his day wearing the free polka dot t-shirt to watch the race come by. It's not a grand affair and it's far from the most important thing he's seen, it's a nice reminder that more exists to our world than just bike racing.

Women's tour of Britain Stage 3. This day was one where a tough one not just for riders but for me too. Weather was very Welsh and my main focal point was the dam at Lake Vyrnwy. Its was an all or nothing shot. I could not get past the riders one committed to the shot. I wanted the to use the dark colours of the dam to contrast the jersey of the riders. I had to climd up half a mountain to get hight too. Okay maybe not a mountain but it was enough for me to retire to the local cafe.

Love this shot. Taken the British National RR champs. Really horrible weather, wet, windy and hard work for the women. Alice Towers won the race with a fantastic break way and just road a strong field of her wheel. This shot is her coach (and Dad) moments after the finish. Maybe because I have a daughter too that the look of pride and love in her dads face is why I love this photo.

This was day one of a shortened tour of Britain. This is the whole Peloton in one shot and if you look you can just see the breakaway riders just riding off in the distance. like Wales, Scotland showed it wet side in the morning and thankfully by the afternoon the weather was okay. I had spotted this spot and got there 45 mins before the race. I had the whole valley of Glenshee to my self and not a soul any where in sight. Stunning back drop to this race and a totally amazing moment.

Again Women's tour of Britain. Stage five the Black mountain. I got there early and walked up to the finish line but as I got to the 2 km to go sign I saw this view. I hope I did it justice, lovely s bends and a stunning back drop. I did not even think of the finish line as this was good enough for me. Thankfully the rain stayed off and for once I stayed dry.

"The Pits" - This is a picture I took at the National Cyclocross Series in the UK. It was sunny, but the mud was shin deep in places. Instead of taking the generic cyclocross photo of the mud, I looked for a different perspective of a discipline less seen. Because the sun was so low & there was a fine spray from the pits, each time a rider passed this particular part of the course, they got a soaking. But, this also created quite an environmental picture, with depth and light rays throughout.

“Blurred Lines” – Throughout the year, I tried to come up with new styles of capturing & processing images. Experimenting with a few landscape photographs, I created a style that others could recognise as mine. I started applying this process to cycling photos. Whilst attending a local National B race in the UK, I captured Sean Adams (Scott Redding Cycling Team) taking a left turn, capturing him at a high shutter speed & then applying what I now refer to as the “fake panning effect” to the photo

“Out from the Depths” - Sa Calobra, arguably the holy grail of climbs to any cycling holiday go’er. Whilst there earlier this year, I witnessed the fastest ascent by anyone on a TT bike, by Harry Palmer. Before he reached the 270 degree bend, I captured this shot of him. I have taken this photo before, but never without any cars, or with a clear sky behind. An iconic photo, for an iconic moment.

“You’ve been Framed” – Something I always try to do with my photos is create some element of framing. Whilst at my local National B race, I was driving around the course, when I noticed the sunlight hitting this small peak in the road, lighting up the background, whilst keeping the surrounding trees in darkness. So I waited for the race to come back around. The breakaway soon came through. So I got low to the ground and I snapped the riders pushing on and hitting the light on the peak perfectly.

“Doorway to Cycling Heaven” – Sa Calobra. Everyone hits it hard, regardless. A pure cycling joy for all that rides it. Switchbacks, views, cafes at the top and bottom. Just as you descent and go around the 270 degree bend you are greeted by what appears to be a gateway to cycling paradise. High spirits on the way down, exhaustion on the way up. The views make it, but the experiences at this one spot last a while.

This photo took me by surprise. It was taken at British national hill climb champs in Wales. This three KM section of road was swamped by noisy and excited fans. This could be the tour on a bit mountain stage but it is a little single track road in the Uk. I moved back to get a better over all shot and and the winner Andy Feathers pictured pictured hit the crest of the hill the sun came out. This my favour shot of the year and taken only 75 kms from my house.

Dropped my glasses in the river and got this shot. Tour of Britain stage 2. I recced this bridge on google and when I got there took a walk over the bridge I dropped my sunglasses in he river. I waded in to the river to retrieve them as they cost a bit. I looked back and saw this view. I waited for the race and took the shot. I got back in to my car in sandals and shorts and to to the finish line as if I had just come off the beach on my holidays.

The final stage of the Tour de France Femmes ended on the infamous Super Planche des Belles Filles. When Demi crossed the finish line she directly went to lie down on the ground, exhausted. Her mother was holding her hand and she quickly jumped over the barriers to hold her tight. She had a big smile on her face and she was constantly whispering to Demi while she was trying to catch her breath. I stayed on the ground enjoying this beautiful magical moment between mother and daughter.

The Tour is always bringing a lot of spectators and cycling fans from all over the world, and if you follow the race on a mountain stage, you know the show and party are guaranteed. I always try to show how is the atmosphere of the race, and here I felt a lot of energy from the people and in combination with the mountain scenery, I just loved it.

On the individual time trial stage of the Giro d'Italia, I was walking up and down the streets of Verona looking for something interesting. For this last stage, it felt right to show some "Italian lifestyle": people, bar, coffee or apertivo. I found some interesting bars but it was not enough, till I saw this nice woman near a very nice plant (I love plants) and at the moment Davide Ballerini passed she was looking at the time on her watch. I thought it was perfect timing for a time trial.

The Sea Cliff Bridge has become a highlight in Australia, for the World Championships it was a must to shoot. I did a recon to find the best spot, it rained a lot so getting up seemed quite difficult: a hard-to-climb trail rope, a lot of mud, and with the two cameras on me it would have been even worst. I would have done anything to get that shoot. Luckily the day before the race we all discovered that there was a way easier trail with no climbing and no ropes, I was quite happy.

I decided to photograph Belgium's oldest Kermesse race, stadsprijs Geraardsbergen. Sadly also the last one after 104 editions. I was looking for typical Belgium scenery, old buildings, weird-looking shop windows, old men watching the race and found these old men sitting on a bench. Everytime the race came by they stood up to see the riders for only a few seconds. I waited on Mathieu van der Poel to fly by and focused on the gentlemen to frame the shot.

I decided to photograph Belgium's oldest Kermesse race, Stadsprijs Geraardsbergen, sadly also the last one after 104 editions. This photo was taken before the race where riders need to pick up their number in the Town Hall. The Town Hall of Geraardsbergen is since 1936, a protected historical monument.

I was looking for a photo where the rider would interact with nature. I noticed a great tree growing above this particular corner. I went up and it even looked better from above. Col du Granon, Tour de France 2022, Stage 11 - The day Jonas Vingegaard cracked Pogacar and set a new record for the ascent, beating Urs Zimmermann’s and Greg LeMond’s time by over 5 minutes. As a cycling spectator, it is a part of the Tour to ride a Col and to spend the day waiting for the riders. If I can, I enjoy arriving early and witnessing the calm moments before the action begins.

After a long day spent in the Kemmelberg during Gent-Wevelgem, I was sitting on the floor waiting for another photographer so that we could drive home together. I took this on the opening day of the Spring classic season the Omloop Het Nieusblad. This shot was taken on the Muur Van Garaardsbergen. The crowds where wonderful and this shot is the breakaway rider Tiesj Benoot cresting the iconic climb. The only looker in great voice shouting there encouragement .

After spending a lifetime watching cyclists barreling along the roads of Northern France, I finally got my opportunity to ride the cobbled roads of Roubaix. I was surprised by the narrowness and camber of the road- something television often robs us of. It served only to make the professionals look even more so in my eyes.

A one shot day.. Stage 7 La Vuelta. Camargo > Cistierna. The peloton had just climbed the cat 1 climb of Puerto de San Glorio from Potes. On the descent, there was a wonderful twisty gorge road and I knew the riders would be lined out. I climbed through dense prickly briars from the road using some local knowledge from the village bar and waited about 2 hours

One of my favourite place in Australia, the climb of Mt Buffalo in Victoria. I loved catching the first light of the day from the slopes of this climb during the Alpine Classic 2022. It is always a magical moment for riders who left the valley in the dark night and then find their way to the morning light along the climbing road. From there, we could find also inspiration and courage.

Vermarc Grote Prijs. It was the third event in three days of sweltering heat, with limited shade for respite on the course. I found a jubilant bunch of local supporters camped out on the roadside with a half-deflated toddler pool, a broken umbrella and an esky at hand. As I cooled my feet, the enthusiasm shown by the Belgium’s was a tad much for some riders over this multi-lap course.

Yorkshire's finest. I've never shot in such a crazy environment. My in-race photography has been incredibly limited, so it was great to accept the challenge of the Alpe d'Huez in full flow. I had no idea what to expect, but the first rider to pass was a young lad I've raced against (don't ask) and from just a few miles down the road. Not to mention the other great stories I could share about standing shoulder to shoulder with the best photographers in the world.

Peter's Posse @cyclingimages and I deliberated hard over a final location on Stage 6 and settled for a spot that had a handful of vantage points. TDS had been hit by Covid pretty hard and the race lost 4 entire teams, so after the break and main bunch had passed us, it was mostly lone riders and pairs, or in Sagan's case, an escort to the top.

I love shooting the Tour and its uniqueness so I drove my car from Turin with my dad to Col du Granon. I wouldn’t miss that stage and its mountains. We walked up the climb for two hours. I really wanted to enjoy the crowd and the atmosphere . We stopped and waited for the riders two km from the finish in a crowded spot more similar to a natural stadium where to cheer the riders, from the first to the last one. Definitely it was worth it.

As the sun began to peek over the horizon, we expected relief from the uncharacteristically cold April’s night. We’d left the west coast of of England 7 hours earlier and were racing to the east through 5 checkpoints for TransEngland. Chilled to the bone after a blizzard, as we left the summit, it was clear that the rising sun would not solve our problems. The north side of the valley was covered in snow and ice, with our competitors tyre marks visible on the treacherous descent to Swaledale.

This photo encapsulates the Germany West to East trip, a 700km bikepacking trip across Germany through Canyon bicycles’ home terrain. The photo shows Liam Yates, a rider known for finding creative new ways to ride on the new breed of drop bar bikes. Squeezing 2.1inch mountain bike tyres into a frame not designed for them, Liam rides down the steps of the Deustches Eck. This is an iconic memorial in Canyon’s hometown, Koblenz, that marks where the Mosel river joins the Rhine.

I’d never had the opportunity to watch track cycling when the Olympics came to London, but the UCI Track Champions League gave me the opportunity to imagine. Screens around the track that deliver key stats give us an insight into what the future of cycling coverage might look like. When British rider Mark Stewart won the men’s scratch race, the room filled with sound so loud it made my hairs stand on end. Not bad for a Saturday evening’s bike racing, maybe this is what they like about football.

I’ve not ridden an alpine pass before, so despite only being 6 hours off a plane and barely slept, creeping up the Gotthard pass from Andermatt in the freezing fog was still quite exciting. After passing over the top and facing to the southern, Italian, side the clouds disappeared and the temperature started to rise. The dappled light hits the new bypass in the distance, but for cyclists, it’s the charm of the hairpinned cobbles that appeals. Or so I’m told, I’m still new to this alpine game.

Gravel roads winding through the lush temperate rainforests of southeast Australia at the foothills of the Alps here. I love how the yellow gilet punctures through the soft foggy mood in a very harmonious balance of colours.

This image was taken during the Giro Della Donna, a race through the temperate rainforests of southeast Australia. I love the rider’s emotionless stare, almost looking right through me. As the riders rode into the fog on the final climb, the temperatures dropped, as well as any indication of how close to the summit they were. I used my phone as a mirror on the bottom of the frame to get an abstract pattern of the reflected canopy. I think it adds to the dreamy mood of the image.

This image is from a local gravel event in my town, the Harcourt Gravel Classic. It was the first event I properly photographed after making the decision to chase after a career in photography. I earned $100AUD for the day, but the images I created here precipitated more work and set the ball rolling. I like the simplicity of this shot, with the contrast of tones on either side of the frame converging on the subject, clearly popping out of the background

This was taken during Strade Bianche on the Monteaperti gravel sector. When I noticed UAE's soigneur I saw it was a good opportunity to get a nice dynamic shot of race favorite and eventual winner Tadej Pogačar.

This was taken during the 2022 Tour of the Alps, a stage race that is always a Tornanti (switchbacks) feast. When I studied the course of that second stage I realised the climb to Passo Rolle offered some unique views that I could not miss. I managed to get to the right spot just in time for the peloton to pass on one of the most scenic switchbacks ever.

This was taken during the last stage of the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, on the steep gravel sector that takes to the Super Planche des Belles Filles finish. The fight for third place between Silvia Persico, Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Juliette Labous looked like one of the most dramatic moments of the day.

This image is of Pauline Ferrand Prevot and Loana Lecomte congratulating each other after the last World Cup of the season. These two french riders had been battling it out for the win, as they have all season long, but the battling always stayed on course. These are two of the best riders in the world, and both from the same nation. But outside of racing they can be friends, without their racing rivalry tainting their relationship.

This photo tells a story of sweat and grime, of heat and exhaustion, and one of determination. Dan McConnell has been Australia’s best male XC athlete for over a decade. Dan lost his professional contract at the end of 2021. But in 2022 Dan resiliently bounced back, racing as a privateer. From pro support to no support, Dan went on to finish 25th at the Worlds, beating his ex-teammates in the Elite Men's race, and proving he still belongs 9 years after his first World Cup win back in 2013.

This image is of Sam Gaze, after winning XC Worlds. After many inconsistent seasons since his first World Cup win back in 2018 Gaze finally cracked it and won one of the biggest races there is. The relief on Gaze’s face is evident, and the softness creates a dreamy feel echoing the calmness and composure he showed during the race. Gaze broke his collarbone 2 days later in a crash during the XCO race, but that didn’t stop his great season. He won Marathon Worlds only 3 weeks later.

This image is of Vlad Dasculu, the peoples champion of Cross-Country MTB. Vlad, one of the nicest riders, still hasn’t won a World Cup despite giving everything, every single time. I love this intimate portrait of Vlad as he tries to recover from the lung busting effort that is XCC. I think it draws the viewer in and positions them to try to imagine how the subject might be feeling. With individual sports the outcome sits heavily on the individual decisions the rider makes in the heat of the moment, and those decisions can end up in heartbreak. I think this image represents the emotions so well, although it’s not Rouleur's main discipline. You see immense disappointment in this image, of a result that could have been. Ignore the helmet and ignore the clothing, and you’ll see an image of a defeat cyclist, repeated countless times throughout cycling media.

Although Downhill feels a world apart from Rouleurs focus, I feel this image fits well. I love the simplicity of this black and white photo. At first it seems like a studio shoot in a grungy industrial space, but this image was taken as Eleonora Farina warmed up before her race run at the World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy. I love the light streaming through the window, side-lighting the subject and spilling onto the background. I love the shapes and shadows cast by the ladder and equipment.

This image is of Hannah Otto punching through the dust kicked up on the first lap of the World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy. I love the minimalism of the rider so clearly visible with dust obscuring everything else so much. You see the action that is happening without it distracting the viewer. You see how hot and dusty it was, and the adverse conditions these riders are competing in, whilst riding at their maximum level for 90 minutes straight.

This photo is of the crazy scenes at the DH World Champs in France after the top 3 spots were taken by french riders. Thousands of fans stormed the finish area, with flares, chainsaws, and noise. Chaos abounding. The French fans are among the most passionate, and this demonstrated that. It shows how big these disciplines are, and feels like scenes of a Football World Cup celebration. This cemented it for me how big this sport truly is, even with its relative size compared to road racing.

During early autumn the dense boreal forests of Sweden are a beautiful yet challenging environment to cycle in. The early frosts make the Grus vag (gravel roads) feel like asphalt until the sun hits melting away the firm salty crust, the ice cold rain pushes in from the Baltic Sea creating a leg sapping soup that slows pace and covers riders head to toe! The goal was to recreate in studio the movements of riding a bike outside. At the same time it was important to keep the product sharp as it was for the launch of the new Vallier Collection in collaboration with Castelli Canada. So I used a combination of constant light to get the blurry effect and strobes to freeze the models. For the geeks, this shot was shoot at 1.6sec at f16.

It was during the Big Red Gravel Run in Canada. These guys were the leading pack and had heavy feet. I was in the back of a pickup and I was fighting against all the holes in the road to get a sharp and aligned shot. I knew at that moment that I had to get a good shot of this scene with the combination of the dry road, the pickup tires and these riders in the middle of that cloud. I believe the black and white effect was a good fit for this one to create a dramatic and strong scene.

I always try to get detail of a race that are a combination of intensity, skills and luck. I place myself to get a scene I have in my head but everything is going fast and you have no control on how people will be placed at the moment you are ready. It's a lot of trial error but when you get something you know it's unique and this is what I'm looking for.

I had the pleasure to shoot with Maghalie Rochette in her playground for her new kit and her sponsors. She had a difficult year and was really happy to get back on her wheels for us before going back to Europe for races. Get some blur!! It's always a challenge to create new stuff for a brand you work with since a long time in a city you shoot cycling weekly. Finding new locations, rethinking a location you have shoot several times, finding new angles. This is where adding blur is getting fun. In this shot I was really happy because we get the idea of a fast bike in an action scene but the brand name on the bike is super sharp. This was my goal for this one.

For me, framing and emotion are the key in a good shot. You can have a blurry subject but if you get the emotion in a good frame you got it. Here's a shot of Ruben Guerrero in Les Grands Prix Cyclistes de Montréal. There is something I really love here with the angle of the building that makes the scene dramatic, the position of Guerrero on his bike centered with that building and that helicopter. There is a lot of intensity here.

This road is the one to get to Puig Major in Mallorca. In this trip I brought my FujiX100T and my Canon R5. I was telling me that I would bring my light camera for the big climbs. But for this 2100m D+ ride there was no reason I wouldn’t bring the big Canon. It was actually the best decision I’ve made in this trip.

A Barbaric Yawp We had just finished shooting stage 4 of the Joe Martin Stage Race in the pouring rain. we was standing by the car, starting to pack up our gear, and we heard a loud yell coming from the direction of the TT start house. I went towards it as quickly as I could, and found Sam Boardman (L39ION of Los Angeles) sitting on the wet ground surrounded by his teammates, overwhelmed with emotion, because he just found out that he won his first professional UCI bike race.

Reflections The fourth stage of the Joe Martin Stage race is an uphill time trial out of Devil’s Den State Park. The course is short, only 4.8km, but at an average of 6% grade it is anything but easy. Throw in some rain, wind, and cold and it makes for a hard day on the bike, and a hard day for photography. In this photo a rider waits in the covered start house for their time to shine.

Water tutu The third day of Tulsa Tough, the air temperature was 104F (40C), the heat index was 111F (43C) and the surface of the road on the infamous “Cry Baby Hill” was measured at over 130F (54C). Officials opened up a “feed zone” (not typically done in American criteriums) where riders could grab fresh bottles, get sprayed down with a hose from one of the houses along the course, or be splashed with water. Xander Graham from Tour of Britain fame and his bidon exchange with Pascal Eenkhoorn has continued to flourish as a cyclist, winning the Scottish National CX championships in 2021, the Scottish series in 2022 and as the season reaches it's climax, he is on the brink of potentially winning the British National CX series. I have followed Xander throughout his season, covering all his races. This shot from the National CX series in Falkirk and the infamous wall, sums up the struggles of CX.

The image was captured at a National Series Cyclocross race in Thurles, Ireland. The conditions were seriously tough for the riders... and the photographers! There was a stretch which had become completely waterlogged and I just knew there was a special image in there. I made my way over and watched for the lines the riders were taking. The edges were actually wetter, so when a few riders aimed for one side I prepared and waited to the impact of the tyres through the sitting water.

This image was taken during a provincial championship race in Navan, Ireland. The course was set up in a local recreational area and, though very challenging, the terrain was quite similar throughout. I was aware that something different would be required to capture an alternative image to those being taken by other photographers. I noticed the short, steep descent and that the light was sitting behind the riders as they rode down. I set up the camera and captured the shot just as I'd hoped.

This image was taken at the Cyclocross World Cup, Dublin. I was walking around the course and scouting out spots for the race, as well as assessing the light. As the riders went by this particular section I noticed their shadows on the material which lined the course. I took a few shots and experimented with the light and focus points, before capturing this image. I love how clear the outline of the shadow is on the fence. Shortly after this shot the sun went in and the light changed completely.

This image shows CX legend Wout van Aert during the Cyclocross World Cup round in Dublin. I wanted an image that would capture the significance of such a rider competing in Ireland, along with a different angle. I spotted some old stone steps which were below the ground level of the track. I then waited for the front runners to come back around and took the moment when van Aert came through. Using the fence above and the ground below, I was able to frame the shot to bring real focus on the rider

Whilst attending the Cyclocross World Cup in Dublin I wanted to hone in on the Irish riders and the incredible home crowd support. I'd seen this large flag moving around the course and then the spectator carrying arrived at the boards area. I was getting good shots, but then decided to lie down on the ground. This gave a much better angle. I then needed the wind to carry the flag and to be in position for the rider as they came through. This all came together perfectly when Liam O'Brien arrived.

At the events I attend there are races for younger riders before the elite riders take part. I get a real kick out of seeing the athletes of the future as they progress. There is something about the faster riders even from a really young age, you can see the determination as they race in really tough conditions. This photo was taken at the third round of the CX National Series in Jenkinstown, Ireland and the rider, Eunan Campbell, had just taken the lead in a really tight race with his peer.

The return of Tour of Hellas to the UCI calendar was probably the highlight of the year. Amazing route design which gave us the opportunity for a few nice pictures showcasing the beauties of my home country. This one combines a glimpse in the life of rural Greece and the fast pacing peloton during stage 4 of the Tour.

Tour of Hellas started in warm and sunny Crete, in a typical Greek late-April scenery. It was in the last stage that the infamous Katara Pass, now scarcely used by locals, took us by surprise, forcing the race director to neutralize the race for a few kilometres due to the obvious limited visibility.

This year's Under 23 National Championships took place under some tough weather conditions, in Halkidiki, northern Greece. This image showcasing the pain of every single one of those young riders is one of my favorites of the year. The most important thing about this photo: both survived. I saw the seagull fly away, although it was not really clear whether she was hurt. I walked all morning between the start and finish zones. Hoping to get so many different angles. I heard that Van Vleuten had fallen. I was on my way back to the start zone, when I had to wait for Mollema at the crossing zone. Then this happened.

My first world championship and therefore my first introduction to the operation of the shuttle vans for photographers. The photo was taken in the penultimate round on Mount Pleasant. With quite a lot of stress, we then have to go to the finish line for the most important photo, knowing that my telephoto lens is still in the locker in the press room. Fortunately, I took a risk to wait until that round. Remco takes another look behind him at the competition. No one to be seen anymore.

Sometimes a detail defines an athlete, and you can recognize him strait away. It’s with this idea in mind I wanted to represent Tadej Pogačar and his now iconic tuft in an intemporal way. I took the opportunity of a shooting for MET Helmets this spring to create this picture with Tadej Pogačar. The idea of shooting him against the artificial light went straight away. Even in casual clothes and dark, you can recognize it’s Tadej, without doubt.

Adam Blazevic at sunrise on one of the many climbs of SEVEN Gravel Race in Australia’s southwest. When I noticed the sun appearing behind the magnificent old tree and the dust rising of the gravel road, I knew there would be a split second opportunity for a great backlit shot of Adam. Adam Blazevic went on to win the 2022 event which is a challenging 125km ride through some magnificent country, and part of the UCI’s newly formed Gravel World Series.

Yellow is the ‘happy colour’, right? This aerial shot taken at Backroads Gravel Race in Australia’s wheatbelt makes me smile. This image has a group of riders covering the brightest coloured landscape of all races I’ve photographed. What was probably already one of the hardest passes ever to be included in the Silk Road Mountain Race, was recently turned into a real test of character and will power by a massive landslide that has added some really steep hike a bike to avoid a dangerous section of loose scree. Riders pushed, carried and generally forced their bikes over this 4185M monster for most of the day. The Silk Road Mountain Race is an unsupported, single-stage race through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan.

Mud turns into gold. Ivar Silk winning the biggest gravel race in the world at @unboundgravel. Ivar rode strong throughout the day, getting into the final elite selection of riders, riding the pace, and then sprinting for the win. More than 4,000 people rode Unbound Gravel this year across various distances.

Cap de Formentor; Pure Gold Infamous amongst cyclists, a rite of passage when riding in Mallorca, and one of the finest 50km rides you could do anywhere in the world. There was just two people at the lighthouse at this time, me with the camera, and Tiago riding a few intervals for Band of Climbers in January 22. I made a note of the time, I'll be back again. I could spend hours shooting and riding in Mallorca.

The Chequamegon 40 is a 40 mile point-to-point mountain bike race that runs backwards along much of the American Birkebeiner cross country ski trail. Photo access points are few and far between, and planning the route and timing required a spreadsheet. We knew this pile of logs was a “must have” location. We arrived moments after the lead women came through, but had time to get in position for this shot before the lead men arrived. Just barely.

After doing my best to be as respectful as possible in my first Post-Roubaix-Showers experience, I took a step back to survey the rest of the scene. This was when I spotted Mathieu Van Der Poel in the second room of showers, on his own, reflecting on what wasn’t his day. Roubaix is a fascinating race, you can be the strongest rider on the start line, but without the cards, or in this case - the stones - falling into place, your good legs can all be for nothing.

On stage 11 of the Tour De France at the top of the Col Du Galibier, I chose to shoot the descent, instead of the famed climb. Unbeknownst to me, fireworks had been going off all the way up the slopes, with Jumbo Visma launching attack after attack to try to shake Tadej Pogacar's grip on yellow. Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard crested the climb and flew past me towards the final test of the day, the Col Du Glandon, where Vingegaard would claim yellow and take it all the way to Paris.

It was Stage 1 of the 2022 Giro. We were on the brink of stopping in a nothing spot, just to bank some pics, when we drove past half a dozen horsemen, fully kitted out in traditional outfits, we knew this was the shot. We jumped out of the car and positioned ourselves in the field, to shoot the horses as they raced next to the peloton while it rolled by. Sure enough, on cue, the horses galloped along parallel to the riders and gave me this shot, well and truly saving the day on the image front.

I wasn't supposed to get this shot. We were headed to the finish of stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes when we stopped in one last spot on the final circuit of the stage. It was a nothing shot, the peloton snaking down a non-descript gentle descent, when I heard a scream and then the unmistakable sound of smashed carbon and bodies hitting the floor. Before I knew it, the green jersey wearer, Lorena Wiebes was hurtling towards me, which would end her race. The harshest side of our sport.

Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes was one of those moments where I feel especially privileged to be as close to the action as I am. Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, one of my favourite cyclists in either peloton, triumphed at the finish into Epernay. She collapsed after her victory, full of an unbridled and raw joy that I hadn't seen in a long time from a professional athlete. It was fantastic to watch, and more importantly, shoot. A real highlight of the season for me.

The intense power of an excited crowd as Jai Hindley enters The Verona Arena victorious at the 2022 Giro d' Italia. The excitement was electric. Taking the win on Stage 20, this put Jai into the Maglia Rosa and all he had to do was hold onto it for the final stage. Jai becomes the first Australian to win The Giro d' Italia and just the second Aussie cyclist to win a Grand Tour. Mission Accomplished.

Dust from hell. After this year's Paris-Roubaix I went to the famous showers of the velodrome - in the hope that I might be able to photograph one or two riders there, marked by the exertions of the day. To my surprise, the first rider I spotted was Mathieu van der Poel. Despite a perhaps not entirely satisfactory race, he seemed relieved to have survived the challenges of the day.

Drops of relief. One of the best riders of our time, at an iconic place of cycling. This photo will remain in my mind for a long time. Sometimes Mathieu van der Poel's performances may appear supernatural and out of this world, but at that moment he seemed like any other cyclist after a hard day. Happy to wipe away the day's exertions, relieved to have survived another exceptionally hard ride.

I turned a corner and there it was, the scene I'd had in mind since racing the event back in 2019. Whilst scrambling up a bank, ready for Women's race leader Sarah Cinquini to approach, a minibus full of Nuns pulled up. Two of the occupants wandered over to photograph the view and everything somehow came together in that moment, including a rare glimpse of the sun! The Transatlantic Way is an unsupported ultra-distance event that follows 2500 kilometres of Irelands rugged west coast.

Between the hours of 2:00 – 7:00am, 180 cyclists arrived at the Poole control of Moonrakers and Sunseekers. I had my lights setup and Carl kindly obliged to have his portrait taken, before continuing on his way. The annual overnight, November Audax starts and finishes in Bristol and is 308 kilometres in length. Part of my ongoing project: The Randonneurs.

After 5 days of riding and photographing London Edinburgh London from the saddle, I'd made the finish line. It was in the midst of a heatwave and riders were congregating under any piece of shade available. I approached Carola, who'd also just finished. We didn't exchange too many words in that moment, apart from that she'd travelled from Hamburg to the event. I'm pleased to have provided her a momento from what was a very challenging ride, where only 60% completed the 1540 kilometre course.

It was taken during the french’s Gravel champion in Nommay, France 10/23/2022. I took this picture during the women’s race, in the early morning. Younger riders already rode the circuit si the mud was really soft in this stiff slope. Cyclists had to carry their bike, climb this part of the circuit and try not to fall. With the sun above them i try to show the difficuties and the pain of the riders.

I took this picture at the beginning of the junior’s race during the french Gravel championship in Nommay the 10/23/2022. Almost 122 riders took thé start of the race this part was at the beginning of the circuit. After two days of Racing the mud was pretty soft and riders had to fight not to fall and Lost places. I wanted to show the complexity of this sport and the fervor of the public.

On stage 2 of the 2022 @MigrationGravelRace in Kenya, @teamamani ‘s @nancyakidebe dug deep to recover lost time from stage 1. Nancy had a terrible crash at km 70 that left her with a deeply bruised shoulder and a swollen eye. But she persisted, won the stage and took the overall lead for the day. It showed again that the strength and talent of East African cyclists is something to be reckoned with for the future of this sport.

Larger than life. @teamamani's team captain Sule Kangangi (leading out his teammate @sjord5an_schleck in the image) tragically lost his life after crashing at high speed during a race in Vermont in August 2022. Gaping holes are left when giant’s fall. Sule was a giant. But the memory of Sule, and the path he set out together with Team AMANI to create equal opportunities for East African cyclists has only become clearer over the last few months. It's time to change the face of cycling.

On the way out of the sunny and warm canton of Ticino, the peloton enters a seriers tunnels before they the ultimate challenge of the final climb up to Moosalp on the queen stage of the Tour de Suisse. I always wanted to make this picture but it never happened that I was with my motorcyclist so early enought in the tunnels that we could safely park the bike and I could capture the Peleton from this perspective.

Arrived at the press center, I wanted to run up the stairs to be in front of the superstar in the hall. then Peter asked me if I wanted to ride with them right away? Sure, so I could take this very personal picture. A very nice guy this Peter Sagan!

This image was captured during the Antwerp Port Epic cycling race. It's a 1.1 race in Belgium with a lot of cobbles and unpaved sections.. We see the peloton pictured in the fields with some horses in fort. I knew the TV-Helicopter is traditionally very low during this race so I wanted to get it in frame. When me and my motorpilot spotted the horses, we tought it would make a great picture.

An incredible solo effort by Zoe Backstedt at 2022 Junior Women’s World Championships. This image was conceived to reflect the intense feelings I had from the loss of our dear daughter Maddy who passed away from Leukemia a few months prior to this race, in a painful reminder of the World Junior Women’s Road Championships in Florence, Italy in which she competed 9 years prior. Captured on Leica Q2 Monochrom with stacked ND filters in an attempt to permanently etch the emotions into this image.

Zoe Backstedt 2022 Junior Women World Road Championship. This image demonstrates the impact an event can have on many lives, and a young individual can have on many. Captured in film on Hassleblad 503CX. I was emotionally unable to process the film for months (see image 1 narrative). Those intervening months cover minutes between the two photos, but reveal a progression toward hope for the future, as demonstrated by the removal of the subtractive composition in the first image submitted.

This photo was taking during the Sixday of Rotterdam. Yoeri Havik slings Niki Terpstra into the race. A quick word of tactics is shared in a split moment. Track racing, and especially the Madison, has always had a spot in my heart. It is my favourite race on the velodrome to race and to shoot (of course not at the same time). Speed and bike handling are essential and the idea of the photo is to bring this to the viewer.

Romain Bardet finds his way to the top of the Col du Granon. Cycling does not get much better than a mountain stage in the Tour de France. Enthusiastic fans and even smoke bombs are part of the excitement. From far you hear the fans supporting the riders. When the athletes come closer the noise gets louder and louder until they pass right in front of you. Those moments are an amazing experience, and even after capturing many mountain stages, it is still a bless to work in this crazy environment.

Remco. What a year he had. That World championships he did in Wollongong was just mind-blowing. For this young guy winning races seems easy and he is almost always in control. In control of the race and of his emotions. To see him wipe away a tear on the podium was therefor a special moment. It was touching.

This was day 4 of the 2022 Rapha Pennine Rally. I've been part of this Rally for a few years and love the concept, the people and most all the places the rally goes. This is the drop into Ribblehead Viaduct, iconic in the 3 Peaks CX race. I always look for lead lines and single riders when i shoot and this shot had both!

Day 2 on the Rapha Pennine Rally involves the 'cut through'...riders feel lost and enclosed amongst the woods of the Scottish borders. The darkness gives me the chance to silhouette riders amidst tall pine trees. They often don't expect me to be there, like a yeti with a camera!
