The summer air is calming and sweet, especially when the summer sweet is in bloom. The air is filled with the essence of nature. My favorite day of the summer is when I can smell the air before I see the foliage.
Two days in a row I rode past this amazing tree in the brilliant fall landscape near my home in Rhode Island, USA. On the third day I decided I could not let another day pass without capturing this the memory. I hope it looks the same next year so I can see it again.
The morning I took this photo it was just me and a Mom and young son of maybe 4 years old at Point Judith in Rhode Island, USA. I was facing the opposite direction when the little boy screamed “look what the sky is doing”. Look I did, and inspiration followed. Three people witnessed this and I was one, but only because of my bike…and that boy.

The west bank has always been in the center of political disputes and still is, many of which escalated to violent conflicts. As a result, over the years many infrastructure projects initiated by both sides were left to decay before completion. Many of which are paved roads, most in the middle of nowhere and unconnected to any road system, requiring some unconventional paths to reach. One of the few times I was more than happy to have a puncture with a view like this.

Myself and a few friends are big on cycling so when we heard the Tour of Britain was coming close to home we just had to visit. Stage four was set to finish in Llandudno so I made the journey along with my camera and took position at 1km to go. The atmosphere was surreal and seeing the worlds best riders pass within meters was such an experience.

The Ikley GP! one of only two races in the British National Circuit series and I was lucky enough to experience the atmosphere for myself. In this photo we see what is beginning to be the front group of leaders involving the eventual race winner Reece Wood.
British rider Max Stedman showing the effort it takes to secure 11th place after 210km of racing at the 2021 Tour Of Britain.
Hearing the roars of the crowd as the rider slowly progress up the Great Orme in Llandudno with my camera at the ready. the first rider I spot is non other than the world champion and stage favourite Julian Alaphilippe. He turns his head to see where his competitors are as the road levels off at 1km to go. Seconds after the photo he attacks again before Wout has chance to make contact with Alaphilippe and Mike Woods. Wout eventually won but Julian's panache entertains just as much.
This picture was taken during the Worlds. One of the first race since a long time with a crowd. A huge crowd. People were crazy at every corner. While riders were on the flanders circuit, supporters jumped on road and start partying. Just sharing their first moment back together, every nations drinking beers, dancing, shouting, enjoying life enjoying cycling. Suddenly the crowed separated in two and these guys on city bikes climb the Wijnpers full speed. Everyones went crazy about it.

During the Worlds 2021 you have a race in front and a show behind. Since the back of the peloton has done their jobs for their leaders, it's time to enjoy. A communion between the crowd and the riders. Here Nathan Haas doing some wheelie (today we know it was he last as a pro road cyclist) to make people happy. Cycling is not only about racing.
If you're a Belgian cycling fan, this picture needs no words. Wout's face summarize that day perfectly. Winner on paper, but disappointed at the end. When I took this, I was so close to him and the Belgian team, that I could really felt how terrible that day went for all of them. The crowd everywhere was cheering but next to them it was so silent at the same time. The same feeling as when you put your head underwater, you hear stuff from far away and it is so silent as well.
The beauty of terrible conditions. Laurenz Rex after more than 6 hours on the bike, beaten by rain, shaken by cobbles but finally welcomed by sun at the finish in the vélodrome.
1985 or 2021? Glad we have MVPD to realize this was taken this year in the Secteur 28 during Paris Roubaix. Already covered in mud from head to toes, you can definitely feel how harsh the race was at this point. Flooded cobbles sections, highly dangerous, you can see how those riders are focused to stay on the bike. People everywhere were amazed and in admiration for those crazy dudes pushing their boundaries.
Weird to say, but this shot of Elisa Longo Borghini is far more powerful than the one I took of the winner Lizzie. Elisa is riding for the 3rd place of the very first Paris Roubaix Femmes ever. Look the way she smile, because she is 3rd, but mostly because Lizzie won the race the crazy way. Forgetting about the physical pain. Look the Trek's staff being totally nuts about the situation. Still have goosebumps looking at this. This is crazy how cycling can bring the emotions at that level.
Team work. Elisa, Audrey and Lizzie straight after the finish. Celebrating together, crying together, laughing together, suffering together. This is just magical, such moments are unforgettable. They made history. I still clearly hearing and feeling how crazy the atmosphere was, crowd shouting, staff being so proud. It was magical.
Sara Penton, her very last dance of a long career. Sara decided to retire right after Paris Roubaix. And it was her face the second she arrived. As I know her personally, this was a super touching moment, it was like a super ball of emotion hitting you straight into the face. It was a mix of admiration, being proud, amazed about what this girl just did.
How hard Paris Roubaix Femmes is? This hard. Literally she wasn't able to unclip her shoes at the finish. Seems like a renaissance painting, everyone trying to help. The exhaustion feeling of literally all girls after that race proves us that they are warriors!
These guys are the best cyclists on this planet and look how they look like after 257.7kms at 42.7kmh under terrible condition. We probably lived one of the hardest Paris Roubaix that ever happened in a while. At the moment I saw these 3 warriors arrived, I immediately understand this wasn't just a normal race.
As a surf photographer with a passion for cycling and cx racing, who often shoots the surfers in Oostende close to the World Championships CX venue I could not hold myself to enter the freezing Northseawaters and try to get some images from an angle no one else could get. I took this shot during 'Dwars door Vlaanderen 2021'. This was my second 'official' race I shot. As a starting cyclingphotography girl in a 'menworld', I can be very unsure. I was soooo nervous at the start, so I searched for a place without other photographers. Beside that, i'm always looking for an 'not so average shot'. So upstairs was ideal! In this shot, I love those fluo helmets and the contrast with the stairs, the hand of the girl on her teammate's shoulder and those straight lines.

The reflection of a bike on the teamcar, before the start of the Belgian National Road Race Championships. The days before the race, it rained a lot. I tried to create a blurry/mysterious effect in the reflection, created by the water. Still wondering who's bike it was. 🙂
Before the riders passed, this sympathetic old man, with his Nieuwsblad cycling hat, was waiting on those 2 chairs with his wife. They were enjoying the nice weather and atmosphere. I was lucky when they stood up and came a bit closer to watch winner Dylan van Baarle. Dylan rode so smooth and impressive, the face of the old man says enough.
And last but not least, Woutje, just after he won the Belgian National Road Race Championships. Tired, but smiling. What a tremendous season! Thanks Wout!

This photo pictures overcoming last years Rapha Festive500 challenge. Everyone who has done it in the northern hemisphere knows the conditions that are dealt to you most of the time. Cannot wait to get back there in the last week of this year!
After one year of hiatus and a seemingly endless period without racing (everyone knows why) this winter the NRW-Cross-Cup is in full swing and hosting more participants than ever. It feels so great to have finally some CX races as training motivation and to spend some hours and meet people at the race track.
This photo captures what I love about cycling, intense action set against beautiful backgrounds. Vancouver's crit racing came back in full swing this year and one race took place inside a local amusement park. Every angle had interesting compositions, but looking towards the Mary-Go-Round as the sun set in the background and the elite riders flashing by made this a very special moment for me.

As I walked the course of a local crit I spotted this older couple in lawn chairs sitting by a corner. They seemed so relaxed as riders charged into the corner over 45kph. So I tried to capture what they must have been seeing, a blurred, speeding pelaton whizzing by them.
The penultimate cyclocross in British Columbia's lower mainland, Aldergrove CX, saw historic rainfall which flooded the province. A handful of racers braved the weather and rode through insane conditions. Here a rider is running their bike out of knee-high water section as two spectators stand on the waters edge.
Jeremy's Roubaix is a local grassroots race that normally takes place in the spring. Due to COVID restrictions, it was pushed into the summer. This made the gravel sections light and dusty, which reminded me of Strade Bianche. You could spot the pelaton approaching by large, light grey dust clouds moving in the distance.
Racing in a velodrome is fast. I wanted to blur the lines on the track and really give a sense of how fast this rider was going. It's exhilarating being close to the track at those speeds!
This was the second and final crit race at Vancouver's Pacific National Exhibition. The race was dubbed The Roller Coaster Crit, so I wanted to try and capture that with the parks rides in the background as the rider came through the corner.
This photo encapsulates what British Columbia's Aldergrove CX was like. Tons of rain. The shot may look grainy but it was torrential downpour. A handful of rider navigate the steep and slippery trapezoid that was the centerpiece of the race, as one lonely spectator cheered them on at the top.
The morning of the this race was blanketed in complete fog. As the intermediate and singlespeed racers began, the sun crept over the ridge and burst through the trees. The sunrays were brief but really show what a special place Glenridge Acres is for local racers.
Canadian Cyclocross Champion, Michael van den Ham, shows his strength, powering through the mud and rain. I felt his expression was what all riders were experiencing, wet and cold but soldiering on through the rain.
Gravel racing can be just as fast paced as road racing. I wanted to show that and also test how slow I can get my shutter speed down. For this I managed to get a series of good shots at 1/30th, and felt it shows how fast the lead group of this race was!

Battle of Great Orme: Stage 4 of The Tour of Britain tackled the steep slopes of the Great Orme and the cut and thrust of the top riders didn't disappoint as they fought to conquer the climb as well as each other! Having been starved of any road racing in the UK for most of 2020, I was motivated to attend as many races as possible in 2021. The Owen Blower Memorial Road Race attracted some of the best National riders and was fiercely contested throughout the field. This photo is from the Australian Criterium Open held at Noosa Triathlon this year. Normally they get at least one World Tour rider to race, but not this year. Chris Simpson traverses the infamous boardwalks of Llandegla Moors in North Wales during this years GBDuro. The boards are notoriously difficult to ride with ruts pulling wheels left and right making for a twitchy crossing, and paired with treacherous conditions and low lying cloud it was as tough as ever. Stillness and Motion.
It was the end of winter, still a lot of snow but it was starting to get warm to be able to comfortably ride according to a Canadian weather. At the beginning, I was shooting my friends on a different perspective with the mountains behind them. But when I've put the camera down from the drone, this is the moment when I saw something strong. The shadows because of the harsh sunlight, the textures from the road and the snow. And the wave of the road makes it even more dynamic.

Ohhh Big Gravel Run. Have you heard of this one? It was not long after the start, I stepped into the head car. We were driving fast, maybe to fast. I didn't know where we were going and what shot I would do. We decided to parked, I jumped on my bag to grab the drone, and at moment I saw this scene of this awesome road, the riders were almost coming in. No time to think, just pressed the button man and hope that it's gonna look good on your computer!!
The idea was to create the movement of a cyclist in studio for the campaign of Vallier kit. I have to say, it’s was one of my favorite project to develop. A lot of technics behind that. For the geeks, these blurry images were shot at a shutter speed of 1sec with 4 strobes. This is one shot with only colours and contrast editing. The blurry and the sharp face are from the same shot straight out of the cam.
For me, this scene refer to a beautiful end of the day with a lovely ride. It's shot in the air of Sutton in Canada with a view on Bromont mountain. The sunlight was just epic at this moment. This is the kind of shot I would love to see hang in a bike shop because we can all related to it.

I wanted to reproduce the beautiful shots of the Tour de France peloton taken from the side of the road through a hotel room window, but with a distinctive Australian tone. I found that gate that offered me a great frame I thought it was the perfect opportunity. We only miss a few fans in a camping chair and a Cochonou hat, and we could be at the Tour.
This picture represents my idea of cycling: getting on your bike with a mate, no matter the weather, and having a laugh!
I take a lot of pictures at the local crit track, but the races usually happen in the middle of the afternoon. We decided with Erwin to go to the track at sunrise and see what would happen. First, we were greeted with a cloudy sky, but very quickly it cleared and the warm sunlight hit my lens. I love the contract between the flare on the right part of the image and the darker tones on the left.
Heffron Park is a very famous crit track on the Sydney racing scene. The likes of Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas and Caleb Ewan raced there. Edwin (at the front) is often in the breakaway, making the race hard for his sprinter to eventually take the win. He does a lot of work and stays in the shadow. For once, in this picture, he is in the light he deserves.
I think cloud and sky makes a real deal for a good photography. So when I saw this rich sky over our head, I've decided to make the most symmetric shot that would support this beauty. Ok maybe we did this couple of times to make it super symmetrical!
We did our last golden hour photos in Quebec City and we were back to the airbnb. While waiting at the red light, I asked my friends to ride under this illuminated marquise free of anything. At the time the first rider came in, the first car passed in front of the camera, the second time, it was a person who was getting out of the door, a taxi, a bus etc. We finally wait so long to make a clean shot like this.
Something unique in this shot. Making a little detour just to get this shot that feels both closed and evasive.
Shadows shadows! That was a little alley in the Old part of Quebec City where a lot of passerelles allowed me to have this perspective with these sharps shadows.
After almost 2 years of worldwide disruption due to the pandemic, the Worlds in Flanders was my first race since Yorkshire 2019. It felt pretty good to sit by the side of the road and cheer on our heroes again. Specially for the young Belgian fans who clapped every single rider during the Men's Elite Time Trial.

The Belgian train. Sadly, it run out of steam before it reached the station. The noise and the excitement of the home crowd when the Belgian team came into view was amazing. Everybody was getting ready for a local to be crowned World Champion but a Frenchman had other ideas. It didn't spoil the party though, everybody enjoy themselves and showed the rest of the world how to put on a show.
After the Worlds in Flanders we headed to Roubaix. We arrived on Thursday afternoon and parked the camper on Carrefour de l'Arbre, As soon as I parked, I noticed a team car driving down the cobbles towards the restaurant. It was the Valcar–Travel & Service team and the newly crowned Women's World Champion, Elisa Balsamo in her freshly painted Cannondale. She posed for photos and showed the blisters on her hands from riding the cobbles.

This year we had all four seasons on the climb over a 5 hour period. This image shows a rider from the promoting club with the full sweep of the road.

March 2021, The Netherlands is still in lockdown, but it is important that the seasons starts, so the Healty Ageing Tour, has to do the three races on closed circuits, stage one, on the famous Cathedral of Speed, the TT Circuit of Assen, place of the MotoGP Worldchampionship, the peloton roars to the final chicane that leads to the mainstraight. Wimbledon Common magic. This shot was taken at the end of March as the morning light increases as we move into Spring. The infamous "Hardknott Hairpin" on the 2021 Fred Whitton Challenge. The maximum gradient of 33%, which arrives 95 miles into the 113 mile sportive, is rightfully feared by cyclists. The Fred Whitton Challenge 2021 was a break from the norm. Restrictions due to COVID19 resulted in numerous delays to the event, pushing the sportive back to September, rather than the usual May. As a result the riders endured four seasons in a day- sleet and rain eventually gave way to sun, but not before most riders had been thoroughly soaked on their ascent of Hardknott Pass. Note the cyclist's sunglasses in her jersey pocket!
After tackling 'the worst' of Hardknott Pass, by making it past the infamous hairpin bend, Fred Whitton riders still have a gruelling ascent; made worse in 2021 by the foul September weather. A tough cycling challenge that keeps riders 'on the rivet' at the best of times, Hardknott was exacerbated by an almost river like flow of water. The look in this rider's eyes says it all.

Photographing my local TT club this season has been about giving the competitors a memory of their ride, something they can look back on as a moment of their race where like the race itself, it's all about them as an individual. But it's hard when you're doing it on a 60mph road at evening rush hour where you're shooting between cars as they hurtle by, inches from your lens. This was a perfect moment in-between cars; great light, great looking rider, a shot I'm very proud of.

As the TT season builds, you become somewhat enthralled by particular riders when you start to see quirks and patterns in how they ride, and their facial expressions. Always cutting a striking silhouette when he rides.

Gylne Gutuer 2021. The wettest race this year, by FAR. 95 riders started the race, only 10 finished it. This is the peloton riding one of the famous gravel (or mud) sectors about halfway through the race. A truly epic day in ridiculous conditions.

Summer evening rides are the best, even in covid time. For a long period of time I didn't want to ride in groups, only solo or with a good friend. I wanted to make sure I had my vaccines first. As winter draws to an end, the first signs of spring appear. It's the moment that so many keen cyclists have been waiting for: the reopening of the Alpine cols. This year, like many before, Sébastien Jarrot, a.k.a. @cycliste_tricolore can’t resist the appeal of the col du Galibier, where the northern Alps meet the southern Alps. This day of May, we are the first ones to the pass by bike under the benevolence of the snow ploughs which opens the way to us.

The end of May usually marks the start of the summer cycling season and the opening of the Alpine “grand cols”. Once again, Sébastien Jarrot, aka @cycliste_tricolore sights firmly set on climbing that most majestic of northern Alpine cols - the Galibier, all 2,642 metres of it. Despite the heavy snowfalls over the winter, we had high hopes of reaching the summit of this mythical climb out from the Maurienne valley.

Team mates. Determination. Encouragement. Monsal Hill Climb brings people from all over the UK and people line the roads to cheer on both their friends and opponents! The YBC are a club from Sheffield that have been making waves in the cycling scene over the past year, putting on new races and building the community of cycling. They are always out supporting their riders with a loud scream of "Up the WATTS!" as can be seen in this image.
Grit. Determination. Effort. Cycling encompasses all of those words in the simple act of turning the pedals. Pushing and striving for faster times, higher climbs and that unreachable perfection. Monsal Hillclimb is a short effort, too long to sprint but too short to pace. It's an all out effort that sees riders bury themselves for the fastest time. As they emerge through the dappled light in the trees, they are faced with an amphitheatre, full of people cheering their names. This is pure racing.

This is the face-on shot of the rider in silhouette that I submitted earlier. To me it demonstrates how difficult Zwift riding is, often more challenging that actual road bike racing as the rider needs to be constantly alert and cannot 'coast'.

I have been taking cyclocross photos in Japan. I love to take race photos, but I also love to capture "the cyclocross landspace." This is a photo of the national championships a few years ago. I never imagined that it would snow so much, and I was so excited to take photos that I forgot about the cold.

The mornings of cyclocross races are cold, and sometimes it is hard to take photos. But if you stay on the course despite the cold, a beautiful view appears.
A cyclocross course in the woods: what I love to see and shoot.
Waiting to ride. I didn't get many shots in this year, but this one stands out to me. What makes cycling so great is the ability to get up close and personal with the racers. You can feel their pain and the power of the Peloton as it passes you. Nothing like it.

If you race or ride bikes in the Pacific Northwest corner of the USA, you'll submit to more than a few rainy days. This year the elements saved their hits for one event in the Cross Revolution cyclocross series. By the last few races of the day the mud was thick, the temperatures had dropped near freezing and the usual drizzle was replaced by an hours-long full downpour. Nevertheless, dedicated racers pressed on with only a slight side-eye at the elements.

The best part about this photo is that it happened at all. As in many places, racing was limited through the 2020 season. At the Jerry Baker Velodrome, racing consisted only of time trials for months until full fields and crowds were finally back at the track. It felt like welcome chaos after a year of isolation, a giddy celebration of racers back to their tricks on the rail and the sprint lane.
One of the things I love most about the sport of cyclocross is the dedication to non-conformity. Yes, there are rules and guidelines, and even a very uniform team kit. But that doesn't mean you can't add a tiara and Superwoman socks before you race your National Championship Masters Race, as Katie Isermann does here.

Flanders 2021 was epic, this photo was taken on Keizersberg muur in the Leuven circuit, people were happy and cheered for the Belgian team and its main star Van Aert, the fans did not stop singing and cheering on their team, they were very nice to me and give me beers, snacks and space to take photos. it was an incredible experience.

Cycling has become a vital outlet for me to discover my home city of Washington DC. I've seen new parts of the city and I've seen familiar areas in new ways. Uniquely Quirky - Hill climbing is a uniquely British type of cycling event with a unique type of support. this was shot at the UK National hill climb championships held on one of the country's iconic climbs, Winnats Pass, under Biblical conditions on Halloween. The quirkiness of the individual background characters, including the tiny dog sheltering from the rain, to the look of "What the hell am I doing here" on the rider's face are what I love about this shot.
Proud of you son - Shot at the last race of 2021 in my local CX league this cold and tired young rider sought the warmth and comfort from a hug from his doting and proud father following a gruelling race.
Onwards & Upwards - Shot at the last race of 2021 in my local CX league. As the light was beginning to fade a glorious sunset began to appear over the hill as the rider trudged onwards and upwards through increasingly more difficult conditions. A reflection, perhaps, of current times whereby at times the journey may seem like an uphill struggle but brighter times may be just over the crest.

After arriving in the dark, pitching the tent and not knowing what to expect from a last-minute spontaneous 2 day gravel bike-packing adventure through central Scotland, I woke the next morning to exactly why it was the right decision. First morning light over Loch Ossian looking out the front door, reminding me that a mini-break into the wilderness can be all that's needed in the age of a staycation with a picture says a thousands words.
No train-spotting on this trip through central Scotland. Just escaping into the wilderness on two wheels, travelling the old fashioned way and enjoying life at a slower pace.
Life's a beach, and also sometimes a view beside a Loch in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. After a year of staying firmly planted in Scotland, and limited international travel, discovering corners of my own country have ended up being the most beautiful and rewarding trips i've done in years.
There are switchbacks in Scotland if you know where to find them, and a road on the edge of Europe as fearsome as any alpine climb. Where a rider can feel small compared to the towering peaks above, and the top of the pass can still seem a long way off despite the further you climb. A must for any and where I always take people when the travel north, the Bealach na Bà.
Travelling north across the base of Buachaille Etive Mòr, past the first snowfall in the Scottish Highlands, to visit family, and only a short window of time and light to nip out for a quick spin on what felt like the coldest ride of the year despite wearing as many layers as possible, even with the days' final golden rays of warmth at my back.
Finding out that there is more to the world of cycling than just tarmac roads, theres a whole other world of dirt tracks, trails and paths to explore. Partially forced on by the general trend towards gravel but also the yearning of adventure, childish freedom and sense of discovery it has given me in a year of staycationing.
If you at all watched the 'Grand Tour - Lochdown' you'll recognise this road, it featured countless times 'across' Scotland, but really it's just my local climb in the Cairngorms. Still, makes for a great place to attempt an everesting.
Discovering parts of Scotland I'd only heard through word of mouth and didn't think they'd still exist was the best part of staycationing. Forgotton by time, turning to rubble and hidden under the dark waters of Loch Loyne, the 'Road to the Isles' can only be visited in late autumn once the damed waters are at their lowest and the old crumbling tarmac is revealed once again.
Mt. Bachelor in Central Oregon hosted the Gravicross race last August. Gravicross is a combination of downhill, XC, and gravel racing. What made it more difficult this year was the air. For about the month the region suffered from forest fires that clogged the skies. The sun was diffuse and the air smelled like a campfire. I captured one rider near the end of the course as he headed downhill. He was very focused on the remaining few jumps before the finish line.

Whatever I wrote, the words will be too small. That's what we're getting on the bike for!
One of the great things about riding a bike is being in touch with nature.
The final stage of the Ladies Tour of Norway. Next year it will be part of the Battle of the North, although I wouldn't be surprised to still see the town of Halden in the road book. The iconic Halden Fortress is shown here in the back, as the riders below pass the typical wood paneled houses where a spectator waves a Norwegian flag in support.
Many people will have passed by not noticing this little diorama in the wall of a house along the course of the world championships road race in Leuven, Belgium. It looks like the Belgian champion has reached the finish line first in this case.
Also at the world championships, there were both happy and sad goodbyes. Marlen Reusser made sure the crowd cheered for Dutch legend Anna van der Breggen who became DS. Meanwhile on the asphalt you can see the anchor in remembrance of the Dane Chris Anker Sørensen who sadly died a week before.
Imaging being able to summon the most intense focus, race after race, for coming up on two decades. Can't imagine that? Neither can I. But I'm not the greatest competitor to ever climb aboard a bike, either. This shot of Marianne Vos, seconds before the starting gun at Jingle Cross 2021, captures why she's won hundreds of races. The final stage of the SantosFestival of Cycling Women's race took place at Pakapakanthi (Victoria Park) in the heart of Adelaide in absolutely sweltering heat. While the Australian CX Season was yet again brought to a halt by COVID-19, we were lucky enough to have the first two rounds in Adelaide before things really took hold. In late 2021 I stopped trying to pursue a career in cycling in Europe, and can now see this climb through the lens, and tell the story of this inextricable part of cycling history.
