August 2020, first race of the season after first lockdown. Tuscany, Strade bianche. 41 degrees celsius in the shade. I was just struggling trying not to faint...it was hard for to breath...and they were going so hard with their heart at maximum beating. To me, this is a new definition of hero.

Strade Bianche 2020, monte Sante Marie. One of the hardest climbs of the entire race. When a pro rider can't climb...it means he gave all. All, means more then everything you had to give.

Il Lombardia 2020, Remco is racing hard and he's in the first group at the beginning of the "crazy" Muro di Sormano. 5 min after this point, he'll fall hard down a bridge. End of the season. This is cycling, this is sport.

This photo was taken at the end of June this year at the VALGETE TEEDE RATTARALLI (Estonia) and features EF Pro Cycling rider Tanel Kangert being hosed down just after finishing the race. This was the first race in Estonia post Covid-lockdown and also incidentally probably the hottest day of the year. For Tanel, an experienced and long time member of the pro peloton, the relief of the cold water at the end of the race is matched only by the relief of being back racing finally after the lockdown.

Estonian rider Gleb Karpenko battles against the clock in a local time trial. I choose this photo for this competition because of the simplicity, there is almost nothing in the frame except Gleb and his bike, frozen in time. The photo does not show the speed the rider was going, but instead shows the rider at full exertion, locked in a battle that can now only be fought between mental and physical limits.

This shot is of Anna van Der Breggen at this years Worlds in Imola. I only made a handful of races this year due to Covid and a heart attack. So this is one event I felt I had to make. The shot was one I am proud of for the fact it was directly in to the sun with out flash. Its been a hard year all round but for me its one February I did not for almost did not see. I really missed it the racing year. I was fantastic being back after such a long break.

This one is of the mens RR at the Worlds in Italy. I think this photo gives a sense of what it is like in the main peloton while climbing. Marc Hirschi, Jai Hindley, Todej Pogacar and Luke Rowe all in the shot. Riders who all had a big part in the Grand Tours this year.

I took this photo of Julian after his victory on the Tour de France 2020. The emotion was massive for the rider, he stay seat here for a long time to realize what he achieve. One of my last bike ride coverage before lockdown hit Australia in early March 2020, at the start of Autumn. The weather is very changing but the difficulty is still there on the hard slopes of Mt Hotham. Alone, one pedal push after another, free into the wild, we can't image to be somewhere else.

Early 2020, wild bushfires struck the beautiful region I live in. I had to evacuate twice in January and then, in the first week of February, the condition easing enough, I have been able to follow the Sun Tour 2020. I think that what I missed the most during the different lockdown due to the Coronavirus crisis is the see the crowd interact with the our riding heroes. I love to see the passion of young people for this incredible sport. Here a young fan of Peter Sagan and Bora-Hansgrohe team watching the peloton coming over the hill during the last stage of the Herald Sun Tour 2020 in Melbourne streets. LOCKDOWN. That moment of 2020 when everyone had to stop. With this photo, I'm sure many cyclists will be reflected by their days of being confined at home and where they spent hours and hours on their trainers. I portrait some cyclists, without moving from home, via video call, to tell them how to configure their cameras, to take the picture that I had in mind. All the photos had a common thread between them by the light that came from their screens and that illuminated their "pain cave".

I took this at this years Australian National Championships. The elite men started their TT at 6pm in the evening so the light was stunning. I took advantage of a pedestrian bridge that ran above the road and shot this of Rohan Dennis as he passed under me on his first lap. I was stoked to be able to pull this off as I’d been picturing a shot like this since the first riders had started at 10am that morning.

I took this shot at the Tour Down Under this year. The peloton rode through the devastation that the fires had left in their wake. I took this shot on the final climb of Paracombe at this year’s Tour Down Under. The climb itself is pretty boring to look at, so I picked a side of the road and crossed my fingers that something would happen in front of me. Sure enough, Richie Porte launched his attack a few metres in front of me and swung to the opposite side of the road, looking back to see if anyone could follow. They couldn’t.

Mixing urban landscapes with racing is always challenging and during this year lockdown, like many of us, I missed to be out there looking for the perfect point of you. "A little ray of Sunshine". It has been a really challenging 2020 year for everyone involved in the cycling family: the riders and their family, the cycling teams and the race sponsors, all the commissaires and Marshalls, all the media - journalists, videographers and photographers. I would like just to dedicate this photos to all of them, like a light at the end of a tunnel, this "little ray of sunshine" is an optimist regard on our future ahead, looking forward to 2021.

This image is the culmination of three years. A three year plan to the Jersey. A rider. A plan. A bike shop in Portland, Oregon and a pair of mechanics took the Stars and Stripes in cyclocross. This is the moment team manager/mechanic and rider sink into one another's arms in celebration of winning the U.S. Cyclocross National Championship - while team owner sits in the bokeh as only he would have it. It's a technically imperfect image. But it is and always will be a capture I hold dear.

It was a cold snowy day in February; Back when the calendar was full of possibilities. I was in my favorite place in the world: Hood River-Mosier, Oregon. There was a light dusting of snow. I decided to head up to Rowena Crest. As luck would have it, three Eagles were circling that day and a lone cyclist pedaled up the icy climb. If "hope" is the theme, this is an image I think about often: in spite of the conditions - keep pedaling.

After weeks of sitting at home because of corona complaints, it was time to go outside. And there was: Dirty Kanzelled! I was so excited about the 2020 race season and was just as disappointed as the racers when COVID-19 restrictions led to cancelled races and events. Unfortunately it was already November by the time the final race was able to go ahead. But we had a beautiful day in Pitt Meadows, BC for Rock the Ridge Volume 2, hosted by Local Ride Racing. It was complicated working at this year's Tour de France as access was greatly reduced, for fans and accredited photographers alike. Even the classic finish line shot was limited only to very few photographers. But such constraints can be beneficial at times, as they force you to search for other angles. And after only a few stages a couple of photographers discovered this opening just before the line. It was often very hit or miss, but on this day it was definitely a hit in my books!

Ever since the Tour of Italy announced a stage start in the ancient city of Matera, I knew I had to be there. I had long heard about this city, one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. And the thought of a bike race rolling through this town was worth a trip in and off itself. A photo-bombing kangaroo signaled a crazy year ahead. This photo was taken in January 2020 just before massive bushfires nearby blanketed Canberra (Australia) in thick smoke, forcing the cancellation of racing. There were further cancellations soon after, as the COVID-19 pandemic initially shut down all sporting events. Racing has since re-started and the roos are behaving normally. This year has been my first Paris stage of the Tour de France and I was very excited. In this shot, I was focused on the contrast between light and shadows and I particularly liked how this made the Cofidis rider Pierre-Luc Périchon stand out. FEB 2020 - As the theme for the awards this year is definitioned by 'hope', I chose this photo of Stig Broeckx during a rehabilitation training at Igo4fit with trainers Paul Van Den Bosch en Wouter Moors. In the field of psychology 'hope' can be linked to the existence of a goal. Combined with a determined plan for reaching that, 'hope' should be viewed as a cognitive skill that demonstrates an individual's ability to maintain drive in pursuit of a this goal. Well, Stig Broeckx has this skill..

2020 IN MOTION: Like the motion of a high speed peloton in Melbourne's street during the 2020 Herald Sun Tour, the year 2020 has rushed into our life in a very different way. Sometimes, we felt like the crowd, immobile, trap in time during weeks of lockdown. Sometimes, we felt like the riders running to a better and clearer future.

Social Distancing: I like this photo taken during the Peaks Challenge in the high country Victoria of Australia as a reminder for everyone to keep a safe distancing between us during Covid pandemic. „It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish.“ This photo of British rider Thomas Mein was taken at the Cyclo-cross World Cup in Dendermonde (Belgium) on December 27th, 2020. More than a race win. Seconds after Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado won the Cyclo-cross World Championship, she sank down right in front of me, overwhelmed by her emotions. A truly historical achievement, as she has been the first colored cyclist to win this World title. The perfect line. Mathieu van der Poel is truly an exceptional rider with outstanding bike skills. To see him finding the perfect line is an impressive show. At the World Championship 2020 in Duebendorf (Switzerland) i aimed for this minimalistic shot from a bridge, reduced on Mathieu van der Poel and these lines in the mud. This shot was taken at my local club 10 mile TT in August. In the UK the TT's were about the only group activity that was allowed at the time, there were no weekend social rides and no local races. So as consequence the weekly club 10s were very popular, the good weather help too. I knew the course well and had a spot in mind to photograph the riders as the sun was going down. I started to play with slow shutter speeds to see how far I could push things. This is the one I'm most proud.

Like a lot of freelancers things were tough. The summer was especially bleak work wise in particular personally. I was due to loose a part time job working on sportive events in the UK, so getting out and doing something was positive step. Tour de France 2020 - Stage 1 - Finish sprint won by Alexander Kristoff. This year the access to the finish was sometimes restricted and I could not always get there. It was necessary to take a new approach and photograph the finish from new angles. A photo trail on a final sprint is a bit of a bet, it's great or it doesn't work. A sprint takes place in seconds, just enough time for spectators to shout 'they're coming!' and to feel the breath of the riders cycling at full speed.

And then suddenly Italian rider Elia Viviani came out of the dust backlit by the summer sunlight. There was chaos all around him as cars were honking and mechanics yelling. And yet Viviani seemed totally resigned. The sprinter on the Cofidis team had been struggling through much of the Tour de France, unable to find his best legs. And on a climbing day like today, he was in total survival mode to begin with. But his bad day obviously had just gotten worse. There was power in the emptiness, however, in his expression. Viviani was seemingly void of emotion, broken by his misfortune on the Plâteau de Glières. And yet I had the distinct feeling that what he wanted to do most was simply scream. And when I got back to the press room and saw my images, I knew I had a completely unique shot, one that summed up the disappointment and defeat we have all come to know as cyclists—but in a way I had never quite seen before.
