This photo has been taken just a couple of days ago on my last assignment during the 2019 Tour of Bright in Victoria Australia. The last stage is set at the top of Mt Buffalo National Park and this year, to celebrate the first day of Australia Summer, the weather offer us a last dusting of snow. The riders were facing a difficult climb in very hard weather conditions, but most of them love it. It is what made our beautiful sport something apart.

Ever met a mad man? One of my photography idols, Chris Burkard, is one. It takes a special person to hop on a bike and crush out a 1000 miles, so 800 miles was a walk in the park for this guy. Weather rolled in on us and the daylight slipped away fast. It got dark and eery quickly.

Paris Roubaix shower enclosure with plaques adorning the booths giving a knod to the cycling greats of the past who’ve cleansed themselves of the blood sweat and tears that ‘Hell’ has thrown at them. Now, photographers and journalists who outnumber the riders flood into the chambers, who drag their reluctant riders into the shower rooms to feature their products & branding in this iconic setting. The CX Nation Cup in Santa Rosa, Ca on December 1st was the perfect primer for local racers making the trek to Washington for the upcoming CX Nationals on December 10th. The day brought perfect CX weather (rain) and perfect CX course conditions (mud). On the last lap of the Downtown Auburn Crit in Auburn, Ca, Tom Vanpelt has a rear wheel mechanical within 200 yards of the finish line. Not giving up, he shoulders the bike and makes a sprint to the finish all while the back wheel falls off his bike and chases him across the line.

This is a drone shot from Sacramento CX which was held at Lange Twins Winery in Lodi, Ca. I shot this venue for the first time last year and I loved all the industrial features that were intertwined throughout the course. This year I wanted to incorporate an industrial theme into the shots. This overhead drone shot captures the magnitude of the facility as a racer crosses a bridge built specifically for trucks to unload grapes for processing.

The inaugural Trans Pyrenees Race takes riders 1500km across the Pyrenees and back including the iconic Col Tourmalet. The self supported race took place in October and with the surrounding towns at the most desolate riders were faced with little for company other than empty chairlifts and the local herd of Llamas.

Events such as the Transcontinental are fascinating in the way they bring in such a huge variety of cyclists of varying experiences and background. This year I wanted to look into how some of these riders were preparing for the race. Jonathan Rankin, who previously made it into the top ten of TCRNo6 (albeit out with general classification as his partner was forced to scratch due to a chest infection), planned a year of training with the firm intention of coming first.

Celebrated for becoming the first women to win the TCR her appearance as an almost complete unknown easily deserves as much attention and well as the incredible ambassador she had become for a cycling discipline that is in many ways still in it's infancy. Alaphilippe flew past me into the blind corner behind where I was stood, truly laying everything on the line to secure another day in yellow.

This image is from the 2019 World Championships. It shows Annemiek Van Vleuten jumping over the barriers to celebrate her astonishing victory with her parents, who were in the crowd after the finish line. Capturing this shot was pure luck, I had no idea Van Vleuten’s parents were in the crowd or that she was going to jump the barriers in such dramatic fashion to reach them, it was a great moment.

My sister Marianne Vos winning La Course in Pau. So good to see her back on the highest level in road racing. Im really happy for her because it was not easy to come back. The way she won in La Course showed that she is on a high level again. She won the 2019 Womens World tour and that was great. This day was emotional for both of us and also my family. Happy I could capture that.

Taken during this years Tour De Yorkshire near Kettlewell at the top of Park Rash. I love the fact minus the I got the whole race in one shot. It reminded me of photo I had seen taken in Italy or Belgium. Rugged and even a bit of dust. I had spotted this view two months earlier and was determined to use it. It reminds me of the classics.

I knew Lizzie Deignan was about to come around a corner and I had seen the Yorkshire flag from the my viewpoint. This was a Yorkshire rider, riding in a Yorkshire World Road championship and I wanted to get the flag in as well. I only had three circuits to get all my shots in. So I took a risk and followed her until the flag came in to view. I had a little bit of luck on my side the wind blow left to right and the flag fluttered as if ordered. Thanks goodness

This one was preplanned to a point. I had taped up a lovely family that let me use their flat (and view) overlooking the Pump house corner at this years World Road racing champs. I had seen the pictures of MVDP on the road and the long shadows and wanted to combine them. At this point I used the side sash window for this shot, I was looking down holding up the window with the back of my head as it would not stay up. but I was happy with the out come but Annemiek Van Vleuten was happier.

MVPD has taken this race by storm and could prove his could win by going very deep. I thought this one would be a run of the mill finishing shot. I looked and saw Trentin giving him the thumbs up as a mark of respect. As Trentin crossed the line he shrugged his shoulders to say what could I do. I love this sporting gesture.

This one shows how cruel sport can be. Last lap a the Worlds in Yorkshire, MVPD blew and looked a sad figure all most mocked by his image on the road. I wonder if that registered with him and what he thought. Again this view was from the top floor flat. I was never going to get the finish line so stayed there for the last three laps My camera lenses all fogged up. The gentleman renting the flat was a Canon user and lent me his 100-400 to get this shot. Thank you so much.

This one taken at the British National RR Champs. only had one stop during this race and picked Blakeney as a good spot to stop. I found the only gap between the houses the sun did not cast a shadow. I also saw the very excited kids and used them as a background on the safety rail. Ian Bibby was the the lone rider in the foreground. I smile every time I see this shot the faces of the girls just loving the moment. Not sure Ian would see it that way.

Tour De Yorkshire again. Top of Park Rash and this shot took hours of waiting and my car nearly getting impaled on the horns of a herd of Highland cattle. I picked my vantage point saw the cyclist come up then the camera bike stalled in front of the peleton. I thought my shot was going to be ruined but thankfully the riders just rode pass them. If you look the can see the rider smiling at the moment. The backdrop with the road going towards Kettlewell adds to the photo I think.

South Coast Classic this one. Brilliant I will be able to get the white cliff in this one? I took point at Beachy head. No signs of the cliffs, so moved about and saw them in the distance and one where I can get the riders in. I had to stand in the middle of a field to get the right angle. I waited nearly a hour the sun was out it was warm and I was doing something I love, I could not have been happier. To top it all the race was won by a mate Jake Scott. All in all good day out

Tour of Britain starting at Berwick on tweed. I was walking from the the team buses to the signing on area. I stopped at the tourist information office and they had hot tea so I was happy. Anne is the lady in the background and she waving and wishing good luck to all the riders. She was lovely and the riders seemed to warm to her. She asked who they were and shouted there names. Again made me smile this photo it was a lovely 20 mins plus a nice cup of tea and got to meet Anne

MVPD again, I only left the RAF 6 years ago so for me seeing the rise of a cycling superstar was new to me. 5 years taking photos and this was the first time I realised I was witnessing something special. This was taken at this years Tour for Britain finishing at Burton Dassett a tricky hill top finish. I spoke to one of the rider on an earlier finish he said to me as he overtook him "it was like I was on junior gears and he went passed me so quickly I nearly sh*t myself".

The Worlds again. I always try to be where other are not when taking photos. The Worlds was as about as difficult condition I have every shot in. I have never been that wet working with my camera. I manage to get this shot of the top three on the final lap. It may not be a beautiful in the true sense of the word but no one else got that one as far as I know. Did I tell you it was grim.

I like to show action & speed in my image making. Here, I panned the images at a low shutter speed (1/40s). This image was taken at a 2019 cyclocross race in country Victoria and I noticed the wonderful and rich autumn colours of the trees. This image is a mixed of sport, movement and colours. Another great shot of cyclocross in a rainy, cold and muddy condition. I always love to see the determination but also the happiness in each riders. In cyclocross, I feel that each riders are very humble and in the same boat at the start of the race. Nobody will complain about the rain, the cold or the mud... Always happy no matter what...

The mad dash around the sectors of Paris-Roubaix. Park in a field, compose, shoot and run back to the car and move on to try and get back ahead of the peloton. This shot was taken fairly early on in the race when I felt in vague control! As the day progressed and plans went out of the window and getting to the locations I thought possible became impossible. Start, 4 stops and the finish is embarrassing compared to some of my braver collegues!

Confusion on the summit of the Col d’Iseran. Hail and ice in Tignes, as well as a landslide blocking the road between Val d'Isère and Tignes, made the final kilometres of the stage impossible to pass by bike and therefore the stage had to be cancelled. Matt White seen here trying to make sense of the situation. I made the decision to not go to the finish of the stage and hope some decisive action would happen here. I certainly wasn't expecting this.

Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia between Frascati and Terracina. One of the wettest days I can remember covering bike races. Tom Dumoulin had earlier had the sense to abandon in the neutralised zone. Pascal Ackermann won the stage and is seen waiting for his team mates to celebrate. I talked my way into an office above the finish line and got a bird's-eye view of the action.

I am mainly a freelance writer, but have a Canon G16 to grab quick shots when I can. The Paris-Roubaix finish line in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux is always pretty chaotic, riders finishing everywhere and media trying cover everyone and everything. Through the coverage we'd already seen how van Aert's race had played out, and for him to persevere and finish was itself a pretty gusty effort. Like others, his first instinct was sink to the ground, his wife there to nurse him while he recovered.

I'd been waiting for a shot of Gilbert as he walked through the tunnel away from the press conference in the Stab Vélodrome, but realised he'd headed straight to doping and the shot was gone. Before I headed away I just though I'd check into the showers one last time and saw a single TV crew there. Knowing they don't hang around for no reason I waited too. Sure enough, Gilbert soon arrived with a very small amount media, so I was able to get another shot I'd hoped for, without the usual crowds.

Races like Roubaix have been well documented by many others, but it's always worth looking for some other angle. While a TV crew were getting an interview with Gilbert in Boonen's cubicle I spotted this safety pin on the floor. Despite advancements in every area of cycling, in reality this picture could have been taken 80 years ago.

My friend Jackson and I saw some fog rolling in the early morning over the foothills. It was quite possibly a storm but we thought maybe, just maybe, we'd get lucky enough to get those dark ominous conditions which make a post-ride coffee that much more satisfactory. I'd say we got very lucky.

Same ride as before. However, this time, I was pretty far ahead on the climb and there was something interesting about seeing him immersed in the fog. It reminded me that cycling, at times, can be a very lonely experience. Sometimes its the solitude we really crave, and other times, every pedal stroke feels like an eternity until we make it to the next town. I couldn't decide which version this moment was.

I always love to try new things, new angles, technics that can make a photograph spectacular. This is an image of Remco Evenepoel during the Grands Prix Cyclistes of Montreal. For the geeky, it was shot at 1/50s at f/11 ISO100. It's a lot of try but when you nailed it it's a lot of satisfactions.

For five years I have been following all CX races in Catalonia. One of them is the International GP of Les Franqueses (UCI C2 and CX Spanish Cup) Every year there is a fu**ing turn, that is a pain in the as for riders. In this case, Oscar bit the dust, literally, but he got up, took off the dust, and continued the race. When the race was finished, I went to look for him, to show the photo. He loved it and asked me if he could have it. In the next race, I gave him a print of this photo.

On the third day of the Pan Celtic Race, the ultra-distance race would pass through an iconic Irish place called The Dark Hedges. Matt, the organizer, led us there to try to photograph the head of the race. But when we arrived at the place I thought it wasn't worth the photo because it was full of tourists. But for once the rain was allied with us and a huge storm dumped upon us by emptying the place and creating the perfect scenary to capture the place and the thoughness of the race it self.

When I was previewing the course at around 7:00 AM at the Chico Downtown Criterium and I saw the sculpture of the hands in the background I knew I had to work it into a shot. The light was terrible most of the day, but I came back every hour or so until I got this shot about mid-afternoon. Sometimes things just line up for you, and other times you have to work the shot until it comes together.

I shot the Mission Criterium for the 1st time this year and it instantly became on of my favorites. It's a fixed gear criterium held in the center of the Mission District in San Fransisco and it brought racers from all over the world. To me its the perfect blend of SF urban courier culture and lycra wearing professional racing. @mrmarktucker has a great, attacking style thats fun to watch. He went off the front about mid way through his race at the Modesto Downtown criterium and was in time-trial mode. The crowd was pulling for him to stay away, but we could see the pack closing with only a few laps to go. This is the moment, with I think one lap to go (maybe 2), when he takes a peek and his shoulders sag as he realizes he's going to get caught

The Red Bull Bay Climb is a short hillclimb up 3 of the steepest blocks in the Portrero Hill neighborhood of San Fransisco. Grades start at 17%, go up to 21% in the middle, finish at 19%. Heats are about 90 seconds long, but most riders are absolutely spent at the line. I love this interaction between @izzybikes and @kymnonstop at the end of their fixed gear heat.

The final corner at the San Rafael Sunset Criterium frequently has spectators 2 or 3 deep, but as I was walking by I noticed a small gap. I was able to grab this one quickly before someone came up and filled the spot.

Surf City Cyclocross is the longest continually running cyclocross race in the USA and takes place in my hometown. One of the challenges this year was running the course through 7-8 foot high dry weeds. It made for a unique photo opportunity.

When I arrived in Warwick to shoot the start of the fourth stage of the OVO Energy Women's Tour, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the Tudor building on the right of my photo. I chose "Respect" as the title for this picture. This photo is the finish of stage 21 of the Tour de France in Paris, and shows on the left the new winner of the French race, Colombian Egan Bernal who, as a sign of respect, would like to thanks his "captain" the Welshman Geraint Thomas on right (winner of the previous edition of the Tour de France) which in turn "shows" to the Parisian public the real protagonist and the strongest rider of this edition of the race.

Take a photo of me!11th stage of the Tour de France, all the photographers knew that on this stage there would be sunflowers and so it was.A beautiful sunflower field in front of us,I think all the photographers following the Tour de France were stationary in that field.The bunch arrives and I start taking the classic postcard picture,at one point I hear a voice,I looked at what was happening and I saw Sagan waving to us photographers and it seemed he wanted to be shoot on the sunflowers field.

Without a doubt Paris-Roubaix is my favorite race in the world. Here on one Sunday every April, I find all of the action of a three-week grand tour packed into a single day of racing. But my best picture of the day came well after the finish when Australian Mitch Docker walked up to the old showers. Despite a face battered by dust and wind, he was all smiles. But then Paris-Roubaix is like that. Every rider is just happy to finish!

I love discovering new races, and one of my favorite races in recent years has been the Tour de Provence. And this year's race offered and unexpected surprise when it entered the Circuit Paul Ricard, France’s foremost Formula 1 race track. Known for its distinctive blue stripes in the turns and on the edges it also provided an utterly magical backdrop when the peloton entered. And in all of my years covering cycling, something I had never quite seen.

Julian Alaphilippe forever captured the hearts of Tour de France fans around the world last July. One of his defining moments came when he won the time trial in Pau. Waiting in the wings of his support staff, I fought for a small opportunity to capture the emotion of this momentous ride as he skidded to a stop. The scrum was brutal. But then suddenly Alaphilippe turned around and raised his arms. The moment lasted less than a second. But it was mine.

I was in Israel with the new Pro Tem including three german riders. We visited the holocaus meomorial, wich was very intens for all of us, but even more for us germans. Then all of a suddan I found this situation with Andre in the only location phots were allowed. It is a quiet but intens moment.

Top-tier cycling, unlike many professional sports, allows accessibility to its athletes for fans and photographers. It's something I particularly enjoy about it. Being able to walk through the team area, heckle from an arms-length, and meet and speak directly with riders is special and unique to the endeavor. Here is a shot of Crystal Anthony after she finished the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in Iowa City. The mud, the relief, and the stare that this image captures is a result of this privilege.

This was during the first stage of the 2019 Tour of Estonia. I wanted to get a shot of the feedzone and the musette's being handed up to the riders so I got behind one of the soigneurs, keeping off the road. The feedzone was on a slight downhill with a fast tailwind, so the riders came through at quite a lick. I saw one of the Amore e Vita riders moving across to grab the musette and quickly fired off a few frames. Only later did I notice the rider devilish grin, happy to have caught his lunch.

This is from the 2019 Sangaste Valgeteed Rattaralli, an early season Road race in Estonia which mixes Road with sections of gravel. This year was unseasonably dry and warm. Following this race on motorbike meant I was mostly in a cloud of dust that day. I took this shot when we overtook the race to get to the finish and was lucky to get a shot of the lead rider Axel Nõmmela as he attached. The huge dust cloud surrounding him really sums up the conditions that day.

This photo shows Gabz Cullaigh moments after the Melton Classic. The year before he won and this year he was just about to raise his arms to celebrate a win only to be pip by Colin Joyce. He basically eased up thinking he had it in the bag. The shock or anguish in his eyes are obvious. You can have all the finish line winning shots you want but you also have to understand the race, the story and for me the story was Gabz. Even his girlfriend can not console him. Sport can be cruel sometimes.

The one two and three of this years Worlds in Harrogate. This years event was the wettest I have ever been. This shows the riders on the pump house corner on the last lap. I had already blagged a spot in a B and B for the last three laps. I set up and found my lens steamed up. Thankfully the couple there had a camera and a decent Canon lens. He lent me the lens, the room and gave me decent cup of tea. It was grim, gritty and used my head and got a shot no one else did.

Not for this shot but for another one but keeping my eyes out for the peloton I saw them in a long line snaking along towards the bottom of the climb. I took the shot to see the whole race in one long line was a sight to behold. I have a copy of this photo in my house.

I set out with two friends to try and piece together a gravel ride around Mt. Hood in Oregon. Just a few miles into the ride the path was impassable with snow. We turned back around and took the road to find an alternative route. I snapped this pic as the rain and snow changed to sunshine!

The Oregon Outback route traverses 364 miles of remote gravel roads from the Beaver State's southern border to its northern terminus on the Columbia river. The greater part of our journey was spent wet and cold, but on the penultimate day the sun came out in all its glory to kindly dry out our wet, cold feet.

This is the photo shot in the stage 1 of the 1st edition of Tour of UAE. Fernando Gaviria and Elia Viviani are previous teammate in Quick Step. But Fernando changed to Team UAE last season. In the stage 1 of Tour of UAE, Fernando beat Elia in the sprint. But after the finishing, Fernando waited and made a handshake with Elia. They are competitors, no longer teammate, but still friends.

By far my favourite part of photographing the Tour De Cure rides, are the school visits. Seeing the excitement and joy that it brings not only the students but the riders is incredible. Here one of the riders is wheeling out in fashion as the kids clamber for high fives with them.

At the start of any Tour De Cure ride, there are people who have never spoken or met. By the end of the ride, you are like family. The bonds created between riders and support crew is strong and you miss the bubble once it has ended. These riders were huddled like this and talking amongst themselves after completing the 3 days.

This shot was taken at the start line of the 2019 Road World Championships. The race was delayed, all the riders were getting cold and agitated whilst the rain started to pour. As I looked around for the shot I had in mind, I spotted Mathieu van der Poel resting his chin on his hand. For me this shot was exactly what I was hoping for, the look of frustration but calmness in a situation that was out of his control. The darkness of the shot helps to isolate the moment.

During the "Donostiako klasikoa" (San Sebastian classic, Basque Country), at the end of the climb of Murgil the supporters' atmosphere (always respectful) was incredible, but it wasn't easy to capture it in a shot. I imagined this perspective but it wasn't physically possible, so I asked for help to a few guys: I put a leg on a wooden peg and stood up helped by three drunk boys to keep the balance during few seconds. It wouldn't be possible without them; thanks a lot.

"The Great Devider" > As the race did a local finish lap (in stage 5 of the 2019 Giro), I went in search of a good spot to shoot the peloton passing by and found it at a roundabout 1 km behind the finish where they would then split right in front of me with the long, wet Main Street behind them ...but -per usual- just ahead of the arrival of the peloton, a safety marshal pulled up and in his fluo outfit&flag added an extra layer to this pic that I couldn't have staged better myself. ever.

This is not the most exciting pictures I have taken but the story behind is something. We were in Vermont during Rasputitsa. Everybody was talking english. Matis was a little guy who asked us in french "Rapprochez-vous je veux me réchauffer avec le tuyau d'échappement". Hopefully I am a french Canadian so I understood his request after 2-3 times because I was not believing what he was asking. He asked us to slow down to heat up his frozen and wet hands with the exhaust of the service truck.

The London SixDay Cycling 2019, I have been shooting a personal project on 5x4 film for four years, with often just a few minutes with my 'sitters' between races & generally with available light only, Laura Kenny was graceful, helpful and almost stayed still for the 1 sec exposure!
