With my eyes lost in the apparent disorder, the drawings of Asterix and Obelix, of Panoramix, the Druid, come to mind in the middle of the forest in search of ingredients for their secret potion. Perhaps it has something to do with the incognita and doubt that haunt this sport, the same ones that lead those who approach the roads to open those catapulted bottles to discover their content.

Alaphilippe arrived in the Pyrenees with the intention of defending the yellow with teeth and nails, but nothing further from reality, with the French fans crowded in the roadside, he set the best time of the day. A serious candidate for the GC?

Who said Turkey was a race for sprinters with monotonous days? The snowfall during the fifth stage of the Turkish race surprised the pack which had to face a climb of 15 kilometers (7.7% average) to Kartepe. After that...

I call this one the Lafayette deluge. When shooting crits sometimes your images can start to a look the same....but not when it's raining. I know cyclists hate it....but the photographer?, I live for it.

Shooting at night adds another dimension to your photographs. Shooting in rain makes your images glow. Shooting cycling in both sends your photos to the moon!

I had scouted out locations to fit the stunning landscape of Vermont into the photos of the Vermont Overland gravel race. I decided on Jenne Farm and watched as the line of 100's of riders came down the road.

I don't know the gravel roads of Vermont well and pulled over when I found this spot on the Vermont Overland course. I sat in an overgrown ditch by the side of the road hoping to capture the long grass in the field and the perfect August day in Vermont.

I was playing with the sun in photos this cyclocross season. This picture shot at the Fruitlands Cup of Cyclocross in Harvard, Mass stuck with me. The leading lines, sun flare and crowd at the top of the hill came together the way I'd hoped.

Col du Petit Saint Bernard - May - Snow Patrol! We went in search of snow walls and it was an exceptional year. Shot from high above with a 300 mm lens in zero temperature. In order to capture these images I am also riding so carrying my camera gear and looking after it in bad weather is a challenge. I’ve stood on the same road at the same time in 2017 and it was 26 degrees! This year was incredible - and brutal all at once!

Polar Opposites The contrast between the valley below and the snow with the orange makes this image. I had spotted it and had to descend really fast to get far enough ahead to compose the image - I ride with my camera gear and whilst challenging I think it allows me to see images from inside the ride rather than being in a car which is a totally different perspective.

Mathieu Van Der Poel after he bonked at the Worlds, in Yorkshire. His last lap must have felt excruciatingly long, as he dragged his dizzy and exhausted body around the circuit in Harrogate, with the weight of a great cycling nation's hopes, heavy on his shoulders, sinking as quickly as he slid backwards through the peloton. Never has an emotionless face said so much.

Cycling is a great metaphor for life, in that difficult situations are what allow individuals to truly flourish. I juxtaposed this flower, flourishing in an otherwise dull patch of Yokshire hedgerow, with the back of the peloton in the Ryedale Grand Prix to portray this message visually.

Not for the first time, the ocean and the weather threatened to get in the way of the Tour de Yorkshire. But as an avid surfer, the opportunity to capture my two passions mixing - almost literally, as the ocean threatens to enter the road - was exciting to say the least.

Yorkshire loves cycling. All riders at all events in Yorkshire get a super warm welcome (even when the weather isn't contributing to the warmth) but Yorkshire folk are notoriously proud of their patch of land - or 'Gods own country' as they might call it - so it's no surprise that their rapturous applause steps up a notch when a hometown hero passes by. One of many enthusiastic fans cheers Lizzie Deignan on at the Worlds.

There's layers to this game. You don't necessarily need beautiful scenery to make your photos 'different'. One of my favourite techniques is adding depth to images. In this image from the Ryedale Grand Prix the layers also made a perfect frame, for the riders climbing through the grounds of Ampleforth College, so it attracts attention to the focal point.

Redemption. Jake Scott wins the 2019 KOM jersey in the Tour of Britain having held it the whole way and felt ill on the final day, it was also his dad's birthday upon riding into Manchester for the finale. Jake simply had to finish the stage. 2 years previously, Jake had fought a valiant battle to claim the same jersey but was rolled for a single point in the final stage after. I know how much this bothered Jake and just how much he wanted to prove he was capable of competing with the best.

What did I just do? On the morning of Stage 4 of TDY in Halifax, James said "If I'm still there on the final climb I'm racing it..." and race it he did. James started the attacking with Froome and finished just behind the front trio and managed to claim and impressive 5th on the stage and 5th overall. He came for a top 10; Team Swift hugely over achieved.

I watched Alex at the National TT in 2018 and saw just how devastated he was to finish 3rd behind Tanfield and an absolutely peak Geraint Thomas. An early start on a chilly morning (temperatures dropped close to zero degrees Celsius overnight) meant riders were literally riding through the clouds and mist while navigating the many spectacular climbs of Seven, in Western Australia. This photo is from the Junior Men’s world Championships race this year in a very cold and rainy Yorkshire. I love how this photo pairs the bleak landscape and wet conditions with ‘glamour’ of professional sport. I think this contrast really highlights that despite all of the fuss and the helicopters, cycling is one of the most raw and painful sports there is! The effort can really be seen in the riders face.

I was lucky enough to experience the World Championships in person for the first time this year. My highlight of the Men's Road Race was this Harrogate lady who had welcomed a group of Belgians onto her driveway where they'd set up a gazebo, barbecue and satellite TV. Meanwhile she was thoroughly enjoying her day with her World Championship pom-poms and matching umbrella to fend off the torrential rain! For me it represented the way that the Yorkshire people had embraced the event.

"Jos! Jos! Jos! Jos! Jos!" Jos van Emden passes through Masham during the Men's Elite Individual Time Trial at this year's World Championships. The town's residents had decorated their shops and homes and were out in force to support the riders. The 2019 Tour of Britain ended with a sprint in Manchester city centre and the locals were out in force to support the race. A rider that had often helped teammates to victory in major championships, and who had tragically missed out on becoming Olympic Champion in 2016, finally had her well-deserved day in the sun.

Whilst the local authorities fully got behind the event, this isn't always an easy choice for them to make in difficult economic times. The roads of northern italy are beautiful and twisting even when they wind through the towns and villages. The closing races of the Italian season are a tour de force of falling leaves and last of the warmth and sunshine. This photo was taken at a round of the Winter Series at Odd Down in Bath, UK. The circuit sits at the top of a hill so the races in the winter are often very windy, cold and wet. I’m trying capture the speed and competitiveness of racing while showing the contexts of the place it’s self, the fences that keep the riders safe from the public and the cones that help to mark the course and of course the conditions on a dull cold winters day.

An evening summer cyclocross race in Wiltshire, UK. I always spend time walking around a course trying to find the best places to be depending on the strength and the direction of the light. The race was set in the grounds of a large manor house so there were any number of interesting and historic backdrops to choose from. In the end, I chose a place where the tall grasses hid the narrow cycle tracks and the low summer sunlight up the riders and the beautiful setting.

I try and think about the context of shots so if someone who knew nothing about the event or situation could still have some understanding and empathy. This was a wild and windy day on Stage 3 of the Tour de Yorkshire. The climb up from Robin Hood's Bay is brutal and the break came up a minute before the main peloton. A friend asked to come and support him on a local race. While not racing myself I took a camera to test new lens as well. Being impudent enough I asked to ride in a support car in front of the women's group. When we reached the beautiful tunnel in the wood I've immediately asked to drop me off - I have literally split seconds to compose the shot. Didn't have much time so police car partly didn't get into the frame. But in the end I really like the end result.

Stairway to Heaven. Cyclocross is quite popular in the Netherlands, not in the least because of Mathieu van der Poel. His father, Adrie van der Poel, excelled also in CX-cycling, being a former world champion himself. One cyclocross race is named after him , the GP Adrie van der Poel. Passo Sella I In September I went to the Italian Dolomites to photograph some of the most prestigious mountainpasses. In 2017 I cycled the Sella Ronda, a circular circuit with 4 passes, a few times myself. It still is one of the best tours ever I undertook on the bike. On a hot thursday in the office three colleagues had the spontaneous idea to pack our sleepingbags and go for an expanded afterworkride into the weekend the next day. Due to family obligations our goal was to ride 150km, sleep one night in the woods and going back home by train to be with our families for breakfast at 9.30am on saturday. I slung my camera over my shoulders and went. This was one of the best days of 2019. Less than 16h felt like a 10days holidays. Highly recommended:)

While covering Paris-Brest-Paris, the power of sleep or lack thereof formed a powerful background for this insane feat of human endurance. 1200kms in under 90 hours. It was beyond the human to see people push themselves to a 90-hour jaunt with literally no sleep through biting cold nights, harsh winds, never-ending rolling terrain and sharp sunny days. Every Tuesday night during summer, criterium racing is on at Heffron Park in Sydney (Australia). There are three grades, and even if the A graders usually offer the best show, they don't always win the race (it is a handicap race). I though I would enter this photo as these riders are at the base of the pyramid of the sport: they love cycling, they race hard every week and sometimes, when one of them is very good enough, they make it to the pro peloton.

A home World Championships will be a magnet for any pro rider and Yorkshire certainly was that for local Lizzie Deignan. On her comeback to the womens pro peloton after becoming a mother for the first time, this years championships certainly were going to be a tough ask for Lizzie. The majority of the photographers had left to chase stage winner MVDP whilst I stayed by the finish to witness Mark Cavendish high 5'ing the many fans waiting at the side of the finish schute. Two riders hit out during the final kilometres of Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain. As is so often the case in smaller stage races, the Pro Continental and Continental teams set a challenge for the main contenders of the WorldTour teams to chase. In this case, neither were successful as Team Jumbo-Visma chased them down to set up Dylan Groenewegen for the win. Nicole Steigenga during the Gouden Pijl in Emmen (NL). It's august. The Tour de France is done. It's time for the kermesse's in Belgium and The Netherlands. For the elite men it's a way to show off their jersey's to the public. It's a parade, but not for the elite women. As Nicole Steigenga, they attack every corner, sprint for every bonus, and treat the public some fierce racing. These criterium races are serious business.

This fall I rode from the Oregon coast to Vancouver, Washington on an all day solo ride. I wasn't familiar with the roads so I let the mapping software make the route for me. As I crossed the Coast Range the route took me off of paved roads and sent me up remote logging roads. The roads did not match the map and soon I was all but lost on un-mapped doubletracks through incredible forests. Being lost slowed the ride by a few hours but those were my favorite hours of the day.

Everything I heard about Sea Otter Classic suggested that it was more or less an adrenaline fueled mountain bike festival. I was completely amazed to find that within a mile of the mayhem of the show was an endless network of singletrack trails and gravel roads flowing through verdant, foggy hills. Each day we were able to escape the chaos of the expo for a few hours of meditative paradise.

I've never seen an avalanche, but this summer I had the amazing experience of riding through the remains of one first hand. Nature's power is awe inspiring. Trees over a meter thick weren't just snapped in half, they were chopped into tiny pieces with their cross sections on full display. In places the slide was well over 10m deep. A canyon had been cut through the slide by an excavator, and from that our vantage point was made possible.

Hi, I am Lukáš. As you may know from the previous year, I am suffering from GAD and also social anxiety disorder. And this year, it gets so much worse and it the last few weeks, I am not able to move from my house. But before that, I was able to go at least outside, but not so far. So I had to be creative. So I waited until the full moon will appear and my adventure has started. And on the photo, I decided to do a one-hand wheelie, because I wanted to enjoy that moment as much as I could.

Instagram Handle: lucassaganronald

I love cycling in the night. Empty roads and generally the calm in the city. When it gets dark, cyclists get their bikes back to their houses and for them, the adventure stops. But for me, mainly it just starts. Although I am not able to go that fast on the bike now, but on the photo, I wanted to show myself riding as fast as I can. And when I am cycling, I am always smiling.

In the last few weeks, I was not able to go outside. But my passion for cycling was bigger. After a long preparation, I just made one lap around my house and felt totally exhausted on the ground. I had to take my bike back home in tears. So if you are going for a ride, enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful sceneries. When the next time you will be on the bike, just stop, close your eyes, take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. Oh, how lucky you are. I hope I will experience this also one day.

For this reason, taking this photo is not without risk, but I had to capture this unique angle at least once.

Walk your donkey. It's a common theme for us. A week in the San Juan Mountains in Southern Colorado pushed that phrase to the next level. This was my first real trip with the Rodeo crew, as well as my first for this type of riding. Pushing bikes is small compared to the limits you push mentally and physically. This was by far some of the hardest riding I have ever done. It was also the most rewarding. Getting to spend these moments with friends new and old made them so much more enjoyable.

We owe the mountains our respect, and some days, they choose to remind us of that. The trade-off for climbing the highest, most exposed and most spectacular peaks is being at the mercy of the weather. Just as we crested the Col du Galibier, a monumental storm engulfed the mountain, leaving us searching for plastic bags to wrap around our feet and shivering so violently we could barely keep our handlebars straight.

Maybe we love cycling because, at its best, it’s a glorious mixture of emotions – fear, doubt, pain, elation, awe – that can occur in a single ride. I may have shed some actual tears here on Gran Canaria’s GC-606, colloquially known to cyclists as the Valley of the Tears.

To avoid bad weather on the northern side of the mountain range, we decided to continue riding through sunny Spain and take a pass to France further east than initially planned. The first races of the season always have an optimistic feel to them. Even if, like on this day in Callendar Park, the heavens had opened in the days before, turning almost the entire course into a quagmire. Still the racers would round the turn, where I was marshalling, with smiles on their faces. For the most part at least. Or maybe it was pain.

Riding in Scotland does afford you some amazing backdrops, and here at Knockburn Loch, in Aberdeenshire, the hills provide not only that undoubted beauty, but a chance for any clouds in the vicinity to gather - before descending unexpectedly. The riders by this point were well strung out on one of the longest courses of the season, these looping zig-zags offering the only opportunity to see who, and if, you were catching.

Whenever I go to cross races I'm almost as excited by thinking about what I can photograph, as I am about racing. And while shooting through the rain and wind can give a feel for the brutality of the sport, on a clear and sunny day I can break out into the open, and find out just how everyone is feeling. And you know someone is giving it their all when they can't even grab a moment to wipe the snot from their nose. Forget pain face. Snot face is a truer representation of effort.

Paul Van Der Ploeg and I had just finished up a sunset shoot on the top of Mt Pilot in Victoria's Nth East, everything was packed up and we were about to head down. I turned around and saw Paul filming the scene with his phone and thought his silhouette looked amazing, I quickly pulled my camera out of the bag and asked him to ride a few laps on his CX bike. If you know Paul then you'll know he likes to show off a bit and his few laps turned into "I wonder how high I can bunnyhop this thing."

Paul Van Der Ploeg and I were on assingment for Ride High Country to produce some fresh work of Nth East Victoria. Our first day took us up the famous Mt Hotham climb, we scouted out a location near the summit and waited for the sunset. The light kept getting better and it was so cold that Paul just wanted to keep doing laps to stay warm, it was pretty much a dream scenario for our first day.

Finding fresh locations can be difficult sometimes and I find myself riding/hiking further afield to produce imagery that people haven't seen before. For this shoot, Paul Van Der Ploeg and I drove up a long dirt road with no phone reception to find a river crossing, then I waded up stream to try and frame our adventurous environment. It's photoshoots like these that I enjoy the most; cycling, nature, a good mate and a fresh idea.

He had led the race for much of the first 1000km through Scotland, before being hit by a car near the ferry terminal in Stranraer. This story is old as cycling. It's not rebellion--it's freedom. While a "road closed" sign is a ruined day for a motorist, it is an insurance policy for a cyclist. Cheers rang out as we hoisted our bikes over the barricade, knowing the next 10 miles would bring nothing but joy. Climbing through the mountains with no cars is the greatest feeling of all.

I took this photo on my drone the day before the famous Stage 19 of the 2019 Tour de France at the top of the Col de L’Iseran. At 2770m, it was the highest point of the 2019 tour. Who would have thought that only 24 hours later the weather would turn and cause the stage to be cancelled with times taken from the top of this climb. Rohan Dennis showed concentration and determination to blast to victory in the 2019 World Championships Men’s Time Trial in Yorkshire. 2019 saw increasing awareness of the humanity of sports people and the relevance of their mental health. After the race Dennis thanked his sports psychologist, David Spindler, and commented “I mean physically I have always had it, but it was always the negativity in my head”. His ability to excel physically and mentally is shown in this image.

Stylish Hats of Yorkshire. Yorkshire has embraced road racing since hosting the Grand Depart in 2014. Yorkshiremen and women join fans from across the world to spectate and encourage competitors. On this occasion it was Christopher Symonds competing after a last minute call up to cycle for Ghana at the World Championships men's elite time trial. A flat cap and a dour expression is an unmistakable sign of enthusiasm and appreciation.

This photo shows the Internationelles, a team of 10 women cyclists who rode every stage of the last Tour de France one day ahead of the professional men with the French speaking team "Donnons des Elles au Vélo" - who launched the project 5 years ago - in order to promote women cycling and to ask for a women race of the Tour de France. This was between Mâcon and St -Etienne, during stage 8 (12th of July), where they rode from 8 in the morning to 8 in the afternoon.

This photo shows two members of the Internationelles team - a team of 10 non professional women cyclists - during their Tour de France last July. They are passing the top of the Izoard climb during stage 18th of the Tour de France between Embrun and Valloire, with already more than 2 700 km in the legs and only a few hours of sleep each night... to promote equality in cycling !

Here is a picture of some members of the "Donnons des elles au vélo" 2019 team (who have been riding every stage of the Tour de France one day ahead of the professional men since 2015 in order to promote women cycling and to ask for a race opened to women). On the picture, they are shooting a video with a sponsor to promote their action with Dame Sarah Storey (green jersey), multiple paralympic cyclist champion, during stage 4 (8th of July).

Mia Eberstadt is the daughter of a friend of mine, Matthias. In her teens, she's been a strong cyclist for a number of years, but is new to Cyclocross. She's tackled the discipline with a vengeance for her club, New England Development (NE Devo). Here, she's tackling a sand mound with a vengeance at Keene (NH) Pumpkin Cross (Oct 2019).

I didn't get the name of the Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross (Nov 2019) racer to the left in the photo. The racer to the right--in rainbow stripes--needs no introduction ... she's the incomparable Julie Lockhart. Born before Pearl Harbor (Aug 1941), the digital record alone of her CX career tops 350 races. Her palmares include at least 11 US National and 4 World masters championships. She remains a fixture on the New NECX scene, inspiring spectators and fellow racers alike.

During the first Ride the Alps of 2019, a series of car-free events for cyclists of all kinds in the Swiss Alps, I managed to capture two yellow cyclists on this famous hairpin turn on the Bernese side of Susten Pass.

During the last Ride the Alps of 2019, a series of car-free events for cyclists of all kinds in the Swiss Alps, I positioned myself above this beautiful turn with a gorgeous backdrop and managed to capture all these colourful cyclists making their way down (or up) Klausen Pass, Switzerland and enjoying the ride without any cars or motorbikes.

Imogene Pass at dusk. We savored the moment, but it was hard for me to leave the summit. Being one of the last ones down gave me a vantage to see my friends rallying down the mountain, it was all the motivation I needed to join them.

A foggy commute where sounds were muffled and the world seemed asleep was a wild contrast to the chaos and festivities of Sea Otter.

The urge to go somewhere new has brought me to stunning vistas. However, the journey is that much more impactful when I can laugh at the absurdity of it all with friends.

This shot was made in Hungary in a cyclocross near the northern border. Cyclocross just got really popular in Hungary in the last few years, but we had races as old as 20 years. This event was reminded me to old days of cross in my country, with few athletes, and nice scenic courses. It was a really small event, so I was able to move around the course pretty freely, trying out unusual angles.

This photo was taken in a small Hungarian cross race. In those races it's common, that the organizers trying to implement unusual elements to track, to make it a bit more fun to race on it, or photograph it. That's how this small suspended bridge ended up on the course. Not so UCI legal, but a nice little addition.

It's always a good idea to stand far behind the finish line in a cyclocross race. He wasn't even the winner of the junior race, and still haven't left much in that tank. Fun fact, that the jersey is my own work too, I've designed this for his team, a year or two ago.
